Customer Reviews of Need for Speed Underground
Awesome. The sense of speed can't be beat This game is a very awesome game. It has the classic Need for Speed engine but also has a number of new features and enhancements that make this an awesome game. Before I get into this review, let me just say that my main experience in racing games is getting all the cars, tracks, and winning every event in Hot Persuit 2.
First, I'll comment on your sense of speed. You race in an urban environment with a lot of lights and a lot of walls. The streetlights swirl as you speed. The game is so realistic in its sense of speed and the way that light behaves when you move at 200 mph. Not only that, but you need to react fast to the curves or else you'll fall behind very badly. The engine is a lot faster in this game than in Hot Persuit 2.
Next, is the 2 completely unique and innovative race modes in the game: Drag and Drift. Drag racing is where you race in a straight line to see which car is faster, but it still can be very hard, because you have to shift gears perfectly, avoid traffic, and figure out when to use nitro, or you lose the race very easily. Drift racing is a race mode where you get points on how well you slide. In drift mode, you have to slowly get into a slide, then swerve sideways to get a lot of points and the most points wins, not the person who finishes first. If you hit the wall, you lose the points for your slide.
You also get to customize your car. There are many different customization options you have. You can uprade its visuals on the exterior, the interior performance, or trade it in for a new car. In the exterior options, you add or change or remove parts. You can change rims, add custom hoods, roof scoops, spoilers, and side skirts, and uprading these gets your reputation higher, which earns you more points for unlocking visual upgrades. In the visuals, you also paint your car and you get to paint its body, spoiler, and rims. You can also add window tints that are different colors and darknesses. You can also get neon lights that come in different colors. Last, but not least, there are the vinyls, which put vinyl on your car for up to four layers.
You can also upgrade your car's performance. There are 9 categories of uprading your performance: Engine, ECU and fuel system, suspension package, brake kits, drivetrain packages, weight reduction kits, nitrous oxide, and something else. With each one, you start with stock performance and your car becomes infintely faster as you add level 1, level 2, and the highest level 3 performance in your car.
The game does have a few flaws. Upgrading your cars is made easy but accessing them in quick race mode and in underground mode is hard. In underground mode, you made modifications to one car and each car in underground mode gets those, so when you change cars you still have the same upgrades. In quick race mode, you get to use the parts and cars you bought in underground mode for no extra charge. In quick race mode, you upgrade each car individually, which gets long and tedious. Each car is about the same. Once each one has all the upgrades you can get at the time, their difference isn't as substancial as it was in Hot Persuit 2. Also, the indicators of speed, acceleration, and handling aren't always accurate and you can't rely on them too much.
One of the most defeating flaws of the game is the fustration and annoyance involved with each race of the game. In underground mode, there are 111 events and they are not presented in a tree like in HP2. They are presented in a much more linear fashion and you have to complete each event before moving on. A lot of races are fun but some are so fustrating you just want to stop completely. A good example is the 6 lap endurance circuit races that take forever to win and you have to be perfect throughout the course to win. The game is forgiving, but you can easily mess up toward the end and fail the entire race that could've taken you 20 times to get as far as you did. Also, once you get past the unique race modes, the awesome visuals, and the modifications, there isn't much to motivate yout to continue to play. When events get to frustrating, many times, you can't skip them like you could in HP2. However, when they aren't frustrating, it can be fun. In HP2, you can be motivated by getting faster cars, but the cars in underground only get faster when you upgrade them, but getting more upgrades eventually doesn't become motivation.
In the end, even though the game is not perfect and has some flaws, its still worth the buy. You might want to rent it first, but the game is still awesome and unique.
Hope this review helps you
I reserved the game in Octerber and it was well worth the wait for this game I bought it the first day it came out in november. I love this game because it has drag racing it has sprint it has drifting and many more. This is also the first need for speed to have a story mode. It also has music we heard of from bands like rob zombie static x lil jon and more this is a must have game. Best need for speed yet. I own the ps2 one because i wanted to continue my need for speed collection with the playststion. You start the game off with a awsome car and you have to win a race with it but then after you win the race a women your manager in racing wakes you up and tells you to stop dreaming. Then you start the game with 10,000 to buy a car and of coures the car is not as good as the other car but it will due tell you win more cars. Then you continue the game until you beat it. This is a must have game and if i could rate it higher than five i would. I hope this review was helpful to you. If you bye this game i know you will like it as much as i do. The other one i wrote dont mind that i ment to give it 5 stars sorry.
