Customer Reviews of National Lampoon's European Vacation
Better the second time around! The thing that makes "National Lampoon's European Vacation" stand out from its original predecessor "National Lampoon's Vacation" is the lush, green European scenery combined with the dialogue between the film's characters. Add the delightful comedic talents of Monty Python's Eric Idle, and you have the makings of a hilarious movie, with Idle adding an element of slapstick, screwball physical comedy that occurs with each accident that brings with it a style only Chevy Chase's character, Clark Griswold can create. Dana Hill and Jason Lively fit into their roles as brother and sister Audrey and Russ Griswold quite nicely. Let's not forget the lovely talents of Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen Griswold, whose shower scene in the movie is sort of on the risque side, but ends up being hysterical when she finds it advertised on an Italian billboard due to Clark's accidental videotaping! I did find the kissing scene between John Astin's game show emcee character and the Griswold daughter (Dana Hill) character to be totally inappropriate for a film that the whole family can watch together. If you're into scenic films with a good dose of comedic dialogue and action-adventure, then "European Vacation" is the movie for you! Highly recommended
The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Griswolds! Look out!
Finally, this forgotten Vacation movie finds it's way to DVD after all these years! Chevy Chase returns, in his best movie role, as Clark Griswold....hero of the world! He wins a vacation to Europe, courtesy of the (not so) hit television show: Pig In A Poke, and with his quick, high IQ(not)! He plans, with his family, a detailed swing through his mother land, while he burns their barbeque!
Upon arrival in England, he books the family in a world famous hotel....with the top service you would come to expect....uh, maybe not. The next morning, Clark crashes his rental car into another car(the driver graciously gives his damaged fender to Clark) and soon after - Clark drives into a bicycler, Eric Idle(Monty Python fame) - who limps away, with his totaled bike, wanting absolutely no money or help from Clark! Out of his gratefulness, Clark manages to smash into this poor Englishman two more times, ultimately!
Clark shows Ellen, Audrey and Rusty the monumental sights of England - he spends the rest of the day pointing out Big Ben and Parliament(to an eventually sleeping family), because of his inability of making a left lane change/exit in a large loop road! Too funny! After completely ruining Stonehenge(by backing his car into and toppling it), Clark drags his weary family on a quick trek through unforgettable Paris, France....and the beautiful countryside of Germany....with more trouble looming ahead! This entire movie is hilarious and is worthwhile to see! Buy it here at Amazon.com....I did! And so, to quote Rusty Griswold, I shall close by saying...."Oink Oink, my good man!!!!" :)
"I Can't Get Left!!......."
After the hilarious classic that was the original "Vacation", this film was a complete and utter disappointment. Not to say that it didn't have it's moments. It does. Just not as many or as memorable as anything from the original, or even the hysterical "Christmas Vacation". Once again, Chevy Chase and family hop on a plane after they win a trip to England after appearing on a game show hosted by the always great John Astin. Once there, hijinks ensue. I'm talking about Mrs. Griswald being kidnapped. That sets up the climax of the film. I think jumping on a plane and just getting to your destination is what ruins this film and "Vegas Vacation". A trip there, like in the first, is more entertaining and more open to comedic bits. The kids, Rusty and Audrey, are the worst ones in the series. Has anyone noticed that their ages don't change?. They also go up and down in height and weight and hair stylings. In reality, Rusty and Audrey would be 0ver 30. But, amazingly, in every movie they're still 14 years old. If there's a 5th film, maybe Chevy can take his grandchildren on a vacation?. Speaking of Chevy, he is just fine in this. He's funny. The movie, as a whole, is definitley not. Watch out for a hysterical Eric Idle in a small role. Could of been so much better.
