This production by National Geographic follows Dr. Robert Ballard, the familiar deep-sea explorer best known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic, as he searches in the deep Mediterranean for an ancient trading vessel. While Ballard's search for the remains of a Roman ship provides the framework of the documentary, there are also segments looking at divers who go deep into the ocean depths motivated by the search for sunken gold. The focus of the production is really the inherent conflict between these two camps. The tension between scientists such as Ballard, who presents himself as an altruist diving on wrecks to further archeological knowledge, and "treasure hunters" such as Mel Fisher, who discovered the wreck of the Spanish galleon Atocha and sold off its cargo of gold, can never be resolved. But each side has its say. Ballard tells horror stories of how the wrecks of the Titanic and the Lusitania have, in his view, been desecrated, and an impresario responsible for a traveling show of Titanic relics asks pointedly how his work is any different than Ballard's raising of artifacts from the Roman ship discovered off Sicily. Like all National Geographic productions, this features beautiful cinematography, which in this case is a bonus to the thoughtful discussion of the issues of deep-sea exploration. --Robert J.
