Customer Reviews of NHL 2001
Solid Game NHL 2001 is a very solid game with incredible graphics, great sound and tons of action. It is a very entertaining game to play, but for ultra-hockey fans, you may be slightly disappointed by the realism. The game plays far more like an arcade than a simulation. As in every other hockey game, the simulation is more limited as it seems like bone crunching his are the only way to effectively stop the opponent. They have improved this slightly as shot blocking and poke checking are more accurate now. One major problem with this game is that if you use a spin move with a good player, some inexplicable force pushes the defender into the corner. Goalie control is lacking and it's more luck than skill when your netminder stops a shot. Speaking of shots, die hard hockey fans will cringe when I say that in a season, I averaged 50 shots a game and surpassed 100 shots several times in regulation time. There is simply too much offense and scores are routinely high. The game is fun to play, but it is annoying for true hockey fans. Despite this, it is by far the best hockey game ever made.
A Long Review Everybody should read before Buying...
NHL 2002's graphics are intense. Close up shots of Kariya's face after scoring are nothing short of phenomenal. EA sports, as they have proven in PSX (not PS2 yet), are the franchise of sports video gaming. But as most people who gave NHL 2002 three stars or less, I share their deep concerns. The graphic sequence gets too repetitive if you play the whole season. If shifts are unchanged, the same players will do the same routine (same camera angle too!) every time they do their pre-game warm-ups. Fights are as comical(in a negative way)and one-dimensional as the fisticufs the Three Stooges has 40 years ago. The punches are really fast and quick, a gamer might think all hockey players are Sugar Shane Mosleys(he's a really good boxer) or something. That's not how it looks like in a real NHL hockey game. A "pull-the-jersey-over-the-head-option" might have been great.
My other concern is the create-a-player option is total septic tank quality. EA sports are stereotyping that all people interested in hockey are caucasian. The minority skin color alternative was ignored in the game. I am a little on the darker side complexion wise. I have no option to see myself (at least a virtual version of me) score an NHL goal even in the computer! The only choice a gamer got is to have a goatee or not to have a goatee.
The gameplay is somewhat fun. No different than its predecessors. Replay value is average. I couldn't see myself playing two seasons of this game. One more thing, nobody retires after the season is over, no trades are made by other teams except the gamers themselves, which brings down the replay importance. EA Sports Hockey Division needs a lot of improving to do on this title. Ask your Madden Division co-workers next door for some advice.

I thought this was the best hockey playwise nhl.i havent played 2002,but play wise it is much more like the real nhl! especially the saves the goalies make, they literally steal the game or leave it tied at times! the defense is much more like real nhl,but 03',and 04' did have better graphics thats why i give it 4 stars! i highly recommend it!
