Customer Reviews of NEC MultiSync LCD1770VX-BK 17" LCD Monitor (Black)
Decent monitor Bought an NEC Multisync LCD 1770VX monitor a few days ago on Ebay for $140.00 new--or open box, more likely. Shortly after the auction, I came apon the few reviews to be found for this monitor which say it's overall design is fine but that its image quality is mediocre--specifically, it has less dynamic range than competitiors, the lighter grey tones falling off into white (clipped highlights) and the darker greys falling off into black too quickly. I didn't want to hear this after buying the monitor for judging digital photos. but there was nothing to do but see for myself when it arrived. <

>The monitor arrived in its product box and I was easily able to hook it up to an old Apple G4 mirror door Power Mac with the monitor's enclosed cable. Turning it on and judging initial results with some familiar digital photos, the images showed much too much contrast and exhibited characteristics that matched the reviews. But the images improved considerably with adjustments, both through the monitor controls and the Apple monitor programs for selecting and modifying profiles. The monitor looked best when its brightness and contrast levels were set well below 50% by the monitor's controls. Images could also be individually adjusted in Photoshop to look just fine. The highlight clipping is minimal and seems to be most obvious in JPG images that were over-exposed to begin with. There is software not in the box available from NEC that permits adjustments to the monitor by your keyboard--but it only works in Microsoft (and possibly Apple's newer products). <

>Since I bought the monitor to just peruse Iphoto images and the results are really quiet good, the monitor is a keeper. Images on the monitor do display considerable change in value or saturation when viewing the screen from different angles, something not unique to this monitor. If an image fills the entire field of view, the top will be darker than the bottom of the scene--but then, this isn't an Apple monitor. <

>All in all, this is a better monitor than the reviews give it credit. It is very compact and doesn't clutter the desk. Full retail price seems steep and is steep compared to current Ebay prices.
