Customer Reviews of NBA Live 2006
Got a basketball Jones I haven't followed the NBA since Jordan retired from the Bulls.... again, and I have mostly just played the NBA Live series on the Super Nintendo, because even tho each year the graphics get better and more is added, I still prefer NBA Live 96 on snes over them all. <
> <
>I recently purchased Michael Jordan's 20th anniversary DVD and it re sparked a bit of interest in me to play some basketball after that DVD provided me with a demo of NBA LIVE 01. I started to kinda enjoy it, even tho it was only 1 on 1 in the demo and I also got NBA Live 03's demo and thought they weren't bad at all, so i thought id get a full version at long last and the only one available was 06. <
> <
>Keep in mind I've only played Coach K, 95,96,97,98 on snes and a few on Sega gen. and 99 and 00 on n64 and I used to have 96 on PC years ago... and well, the new versions are a lot more updated, the graphics have improved a hell of a lot, you can actually just about tell who anyone is now on the court without just looking at there number, the dunks have improved a lot, the extra modes have come along way, but I dunno what it is, I still think they haven't captured the fun of the originals, and I still prefer 96 on snes over them all. <
> <
>But that's not to say I haven't enjoyed 06... I've heard a lot of reviews saying it isn't as good as the past few years versions, but I wouldn't know, I never played them... I'm not sorry i bought this version. <

>As usual the first thing I did after a brief run on the court was edit the rosters, but I find that you cant really create the exact face you want, its all pretty much the same looks with them all, and I was disappointed that it does include a legends roster that you can sign a few of those players to your actual teams, but the big stars like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar are not signable, you can only play as them on the legends roster... then there is missing legends such as Karl Malone, John Stockton and of coarse, his airiness Michael Jordan. but yet there is a 100 pair of MJ shoes you can put on your players. <
> <
>But, the good thing is you can go to the EA sports website and go to the NBA LIVE section and people have actually made patches for you to download and just place in the folders it says to and instantly you have the legends of the game, depending on what you download and install will depend on weather the legends become available for any team or if you just want to add a whole historic team to the game as an added on team.. So what happens is say you want Chicago, there is your normal 06 team, then you scroll through and you have another Chicago team from 1992 and another of 1996 complete team with complete players that weren't in the game before the patch, and it also includes there stats, pictures and voice overs so that it doesn't just say "number 23 bulls" like a custom player, it does actually say "Michael Jordan" and they have created there actual faces to go with it. And it can be pretty funny when playing with Steve Kerr in the 96 Bulls team and you hear the commentary of Steve Kerr say, "he reminds me a lot of myself when I used to play" <

>So I'm happy I have those guys in the game now looking as best as possible without having to waste time creating them and not having them look right. <

>There is the regular season mode, playoffs and exhibitions. There is also an all-star weekend where you can compete in the 3 point contest or the slam dunk contest... in an exhibition the all star team is those of the all-stars of 06, but i think you can get your own player into it in season mode, tho don't quote me on that, I haven't bothered to play a full season yet. (All-star game I'm talking about, you can pick whomever you want at anytime in the 3 point or dunk contests) <

>The 3-point shootout isn't much; I manage to knock every shot in with ease. but the dunk contest is not easy... it's not just running to the ring and pressing dunk, it involved a lot more where you choose your position on the court, run or move or whatever and choose 1 of 4 buttons to execute a jump style, then you press 1 of the 4 buttons again to choose a dunk style, and there is many combinations to do, and then you do the same as above holding 1 button or another and you end up with different dunks, then don't hold it, then hold it and so on and so on ... but the dunks you do in the slam dunk contest are not the ones you do in a game... you can even throw the ball, or bounce it off the back board or even the jumbo-trons and do cartwheels and hang off the ring, do 720 spinning dunks... but it does take a lot of practice to master these things and that's why there is a dunk school mode where you can practice these dunks and tricks. <

>Also included is the usual 1 on 1 match, seemed to be more fun in 2001's version. <
> <
>I also recommend you download some court patches of the NBA-LIVE site, there is a great patch that lets you use a lot of outdoor courts in the regular games (5 on 5) instead of just having every game inside a stadium. It adds a lot more replay value to the game when you play different teams and the only thing that seems to change is the floor colour and jerseys. <
> <
>There is a lot more options as well inside the game, and a dynasty mode that is basically a season mode, but you have to draft the team, use salary caps and blah-blah-blah... but after you complete the season, it doesn't end, you come back the next year and from what I've heard it goes up to about 10 years of seasons. <

>Now, the CONS. <
> <
>- Cant turn fouls completely off <
>- There is about 5 different camera views you can use and none of them are the one you really want. it would be nice if theyd let you use an option to rotate and spin the camera around and zoom it in or out to where you want it to be, I'm pretty sure NBA LIVE 96 on PC had that option, if it didn't, it certainly had better camera views so why the hell did they take it away? When you do a replay in this game you can change the angle to wherever you want, but not in regular cam position! They need to replay camera option to be useable as your regular view cam option. <
>- It was easier to dunk in NBA LIVE 2001... the demo version anyway; the in game dunks seem to be less powerful now. <
>- The dunk contest can be annoying because it takes so damn long for it become your turn again. It needs a skip there dunk option, like it has in the 3 point shootout, plus, you only get one camera view in the dunk contest (during the match, not the replay) and it's annoying when you practice on one angle and then you cant see it head on in the match. <
>- It isn't as easy to block opponents anymore like in 01... or hell, any versions before that. <
>- There is no intentional foul anymore (push/shove) to knock them down. <
>- Listening to Steve Kerr's commentary gets way too repetitive each game, and so does whatsernames in the dunk contest, funny at first, but annoying one you've heard it 100 times. <

>Overall: for the price of the game at the moment, its ok, I have heard 07 isn't as good as this version, so I wont be bothering with the next few NBA LIVE releases, this one will satisfy me for a while until they make something 100 times better and not just update one small thing. <

>The main reason I still prefer NBA LIVE 96 (snes) over any version is because when you make a players 3 point shooting a 99, the highest it can be, you only have a 1% chance of missing a shot from within the half court range... it was a reason I didn't like 97 up to 00 and stopped playing these NBA LIVE games. At least in 06, when you select there 3 point range to 99, they do go in as long as your close enough to the 3 point line. They wont go in every time from half court, but about a feet away from the 3 point line is about a 90% average... ya still miss a few shots from time to time, but it's a big improvement over the other ones I've played before. But still not as accurate or as far away as the ol' snes fav'
