The first thing players will notice is how the graphics represent such a tremendous leap beyond previous installments of the series. In general, players are nicely animated, and there is a good amount of detail to the arenas. However, the individual-player graphics are uneven. While most of the bodies are well rendered, many of the faces are way off the mark. Virtual Shaquille O'Neal's face looks nothing like the real Shaq's face, and most of the NBA's lesser names are completely unrecognizable. Some marquee players, like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, look fairly authentic.
While the PS2 usually plays an intelligent game of basketball, the controls in NBA Live 2001 have a slightly sluggish feel to them and take some getting used to. Also, EA stripped away both the franchise mode and the NBA challenges (three-point contests, etc.), which had been in previous incarnations of the NBA Live series. There is, however, an excellent one-on-one mode, as well as many legendary NBA players of the past to play with and against.
While NBA Live 2001 doesn't have all we had hoped for in the first pro-basketball PS2 game, it does have enough game to keep you playing all season long. --Mark Brooks
Pros:
- Often brilliant-looking graphics hint at what the PS2 can really do
- Very good hip-hop/funk soundtrack
- Cool one-on-one mode
- Many individual players hold no resemblance to their real-world counterparts
- Franchise mode and NBA challenges removed from series
- Somewhat unresponsive controls

Customer Reviews of NBA Live 2001
GOING A BIT OVERBOARD!!! Let me start by saying that i am a HUGE sports game fan, i own a DC, PS1, and PS2. i have extensivly played just about every baseball/basketball/football/hockey game to be made in the last 10 years. by far the best game i have ever played is madden 2001 for the PS2...that game simply blew me away. I did not have that reaction with this game...but to say the game is worse than nba2k1 or ps1 versions on live is absurd! here are the complaints ive been hearing: 1. No Dynasty mode....well guess what, nobody every said there would BE a dynasty mode! you knew that before you bought the game! 2. Graphics aren't that great....that is simply not true, the graphics are exellent 3. Bad camera angels....this is true, but if you ZOOM OUT you can see a lot more of the court! 4. Controls are the same as for the pS1....DUH! the ps2 controler is virtualy the same as the ps1's! 5. computer AI is poor....now i havent played the game for a whole season yet, but i cant see where it has been bad. if its too easy, move the level up.
I AM NOT trying to say that this game is perfect, there are flaws...players move their arms roboticly, FTs are too easy on any level, and the menu screens arent set up well. But people have to realize that there are flaws in any sports game, even madden 2001...as for people saying nba2k1 is better, well those people are intitled to their opinion, but i disagree. 2k1 is good, but contains numerous flaws (i.e. no shot blocking, and the ability to steal the ball from post players EVERYTIME THEY HAVE BALL!) so take it from me, a man who owns all the games for all the systems...Live is a solid game, and people are over reacting...if a dynasty mode is esential to your playing enjoyment, then by all means, go buy 2k1, but dont buy Live and act surprised when its not there.
Worst b-ball game ever
Sports games are about gameplay, and this one has horrible gameplay. I think it was rushed out the door to compete with the far superior 2K series by Sega.
DON'T BUY!
nba dead 2001
This is the worst video game I've ever played! The worst! I'me not sure what the right camera for a basketball game is, but this isn't it! The game play is duscusting. It has only mediocre graphics. None of your team mates can catch any passes, and you stop running when you get the ball. The commentating is horrible. In a spurs- lakergame, on one end, he'll say chris webber is getting all the rebounds. Then he'll say the lakers are dominating on the boards. It is reppetitive also.
