The clean graphics show some extremely well-detailed players, stadiums, fans, and even coaches. While the player animations aren't quite smooth as glass (there are quite a few speed-ups and slowdowns), the players do move in a fairly realistic manner. When you see the instant replay of your favorite power forward delivering a massive dunk, you'll cheer. To complement the visuals, Sega has added play-by-play and color commentary to document the on-screen action. While this does get a little repetitive, this feature ultimately adds to the atmosphere of realism.
NBA 2K shows some trouble with controls. This is most apparent in handling loose balls. You'll cringe as you occasionally watch long passes sail out of the court, resulting in mindless turnovers. This is especially painful to watch when the Dreamcast can't complete passes to computer-controlled players. These stupid turnovers can, will, and do affect a game's final score--and have even caused a few games to be restarted in disgust. On the positive side, NBA 2K contains a new finesse-based method of hitting foul shots that requires that you squeeze the control triggers in near perfect synch.
The create-a-player and coaching options make it relatively easy to lead your team from postseason TV watchers to championship ring owners.
While the 2000 season's prettiest basketball game offers more than just the most delicious eye candy, there is still a lingering feeling that NBA 2K could've been much better with a little more fine-tuning. At the very least, while NBA 2K is recommended, it is anticipated that the successor NBA 2K1 will offer even more backboard-breaking fun. --Mark Brooks

Customer Reviews of NBA 2K
Best basketball game on the market today I have played some of the other basketball games including nba live for playstation and this game is hands down the best basketball game ever created. From the opening of the introduction of the line-ups (the lights go down and the hoopla begins for the home team), this game is great! Real life-like players, facial expressions, and even in the create a player mode, you can adjust nose size, jaw length, everything. Im halfway thru my first season and I cant help but play at least 5 games a night. The crowd reacts, the coaches shout out instructions and the benches jump up and cheer when the game is close down the stretch. The game loads quickly and the menu is a lot like nfl 2k, fairly easy to navigate. I LOVE THIS GAME. They even call the players by their nickname ie. Jason Williams is "white-chocolate", Damon Stoudamire is "mighty mouse", Shaq is "diesel". Also, in season mode, if your team is the pits, your stands will have maybe 100 fans. This is a must get!
NBA 2K THE NEW KING OF THE COURT
FIRST ANYONE THAT HAS SEEN OR PLAYED NBA 2K KNOWS THAT THIS IS THE MOST REALISTIC LOOKING GAME OUT ON THE MARKET. THE GRAPHICS BLOW YOU AWAY, BUT THE GAME PLAY IS PRETTY GOOD TO0. THE MOVES THAT THE PLAYERS MAKE ARE SO REALISTIC IM CONSTANTLY WATCHING THE INSTANT REPLAY OVER AND OVER IN DIFFERENT VIEWS TO CATCH THE MOVE. HOWEVER, ANYBODY THAT PLAYS BASKETBALL VIDEO GAMES IN TOURNAMENTS WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS KNOWS THAT AFTER AWHILE ALL THAT GLAMMOR AND GLITZ FADES AWAY. THATS WHEN THE STRATEGY AND GAME PLAY COMES INTO FACTOR. I REALLY HAVENT GOT INTO THE ACTUAL PLAYS THAT THE TEAMS RUN YET, BUT THEY LOOK PRETTY SIMILAR TO THE ONE ON NBA LIVE. THE PLAYERS ACTUALLY RUN OFF THE PICKS THAT ARE SET AND EVERYTHING. THE DEFENSE LEAVES SOMETHING TO BE DESIRED. EVEN ON THE HARDEST LEVEL YOU CAN PUMP FAKE YOUR MAN AND DRIVE TO THE HOLE FOR A DUNK ABOUT 85% OF THE TIME. THE GAME ALSO ALLOWS YOU BLOCK SHOTS AT AN ENORMOUS RATE. ANOTHER DOWNFALL IS THE LONG PASSING. THEY NEED MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THAT ON THE NEXT VERSION. THE MOST OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE GAME AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO PLAY NBA LIVE WILL NOTICE IS THE LACK OF ILLEGAL DEFENSE. YOU CAN JUST CAMP OUT IN THE PAINT AND WAIT FOR THE REBOUND OR JUST RUN AROUND ANYWHERE ON THE COURT. THIS TAKES AWAY FROM THE REALNESS OF THE GAME. OVERALL, EVEN WITH ITS DOWNFALLS NBA 2K IS STILL THE KING OF THE COURT FOR NOW. THIS IS A MUST BUY FOR ALL BASKETBALL FANS AND VIDEO GAME JUNKIES. I JUST CANT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT VERSION COMES OUT.
The Best Basketball Game Ever
My tittle says it all. Hands down, no comp., aint nothin' else coming close to the classis, the very first NBA 2K. The BEST sports graphics I've ever seen. This is a true story, no lie. Alright, I was playing NBA 2K on Dreamcast and my father walked past the room and saw only the TV screen and said to me, "There're still playing NBA games? I thought the season was over". It's crazy how technology drastically change, and that game was out over 4 years ago and nothing since has been even able to come close (except ofcourse the other NBA 2K's).NBA Live is just getting up to par with Live 2004. NBA 2K has surpass all other basketball video games and reached a whole new plateau. Not only the graphics are the best but the game play was too real. The moves were so detail. I can't say enough about the game. My Dreamcast is inop. because I think I played it to much but I would buy a whole new system just to play this game. It's a shame the whole Dreamcast system went out of business. I think people were runnin' with playstation just off name alone. If you ask me, If they would have made all games for playstation and Dreamcast, Playstation would have been the one out of business. Anyway, Three words to describe NBA 2K. OFF THE CHAIN!
