Customer Reviews of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 5
In All Seriousness: Dangerously Funny To be perfectly honest I don't own this collection yet--I just added it to my sh opping cart--but as I'm familiar with all four episodes I think I can add my two cents. It's mainly concerning MERLIN'S SHOP ("What? Merlin's Chop?"). The title of this review refers to the fact that I injured myself due to the mirthful fit of laughter that I and three of my friends fell into when we saw it. We laughed constantly, so I can't remember when exactly it happened, but at one point I was laughing so much I could not breathe. I was then knocked off the couch by the guy sitting next to me, who was also in giddy hysterics, and subsequently fell on top of my face. Granted he's a tiny guy, but he was still muffling my feeble attempts to breathe at that moment. Thus this episode nearly fatally suffocated me. <

>A lot of this is because we're sort of odd, and I doubt you'd find the episode nearly as funny as we did unless you are with a small group of close friends who all love mst3k as much as or more than you and are all in a silly mood when they watch it. Nevertheless this is one of my very favorite episodes. The best episodes, in my opinion, focus on the silliest characters over the course of the film. The more ridiculous/laughable/distinct the characters, the better. (ie. 9/10 of the cast of POD PEOPLE, especially Ricky, Tommy, Trumpy...) Merlin and the reviewer and Grampa Borgnine are certainly Characters, if you know what I mean. As far as I'm concerned, this episode alone is worth the price of the set. <

>To me TIME CHASERS isn't as good as MERLIN, but it's pretty close. ("Maybe if I kill me, hollow me out and live in me...") BOGGY CREEK "II" and SATAN are good but also downright disturbing...although the latter has a couple of my favorite moments. ("Don't spook the walnuts.") <

>Anyway, this set is must, unless you're one of those nuts that hates Mike.
A SOLID MST3K BOX SET
I'm a die hard fan of MST3K and own many episodes on VHS and DVD. The problem with some of the box set DVD's that MST3K has released in the past is that for every 2-3 good episodes there's at least 1 stinker. I hate paying for stinkers! Now granted when I say "stinker" I mean that the movie is so bad I feel like Pearl is torturing me by default.

>Volume 5 of the MST3K DVD releases is a set that bucks the trend. All four episodes are great and two border on classic (we're talking Mitchell quality here). I won't bore you with the plot details of the films because...well they're lousy movies to begin with. But TIME CHASERS and BOGGY CREEK 2 are pure gems the way the Satellite Boys manage to skewer them. They can be watched over and over and be enjoyed on a variety of levels. The other offerings A TOUCH OF SATAN and MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS are fine films as well...just not that funny.

>My only gripe is the lack of extras. I'd love to see the films uncut or some behind the scenes shots of the writing process...heck...I'll even take old commercials for MST3K...something!

>So to sum it up! 2 classics! 2 good ones! No stinkers! ENJOY!

> Vol. 5 of Mystery Science Theater 3000 starts with a bang and ends with one! Once again, Mike Nelson is forced to watch cheesy movies on the SOL.

> BOGGY CREEK II: AND THE LEGEND CONTINUES -- Okay..this is perhaps the episode with the MOST DIGUSTING scence of any movie. I'm talking about, of course, Clem and his visit to the outhouse. The Legend of Boggy Creek II is actually the third movie. But, who cares, it still stinks.

> Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders -- One of my favorite episodes. Merlin comes to the modern day to bring good back into the word. "Good" as in magic spells that changes a critic into a baby, a toy that costs $6.66, roasting a cat alive, and burning a dog alive. Merlin's Shop of Mystical Horrors might be a better title.

> Time Chasers --- Actually, this is a good movie showing the pros and cons of time travel. What's bad about it is the acting...and the sets. The "future" is really a mall, and a alley. And the bad guy has an office in a branch library! The MST3K do a good job mocking time travel.

> Touch of Satan --- "This is where the fish lives" ...I love that line. The movie is one of those movies that look like someone's last-known photograph (see "Manos: The Hands of Fate"). This guy meets a girl who is a witch, which gets her powers from the Prince of Darkness. In the end, the guy saves the girl by giving his soul to the devil.
