Blessed with a wondrously gifted comic cast and full of droll details, Mystery Men struggles in fits and spurts towards its climax. Transcendently witty in parts, it's also woefully sophomoric in others. Literally, this is the kind of movie in which someone gets off a brilliant line and then sits on a fork. Still, when this movie is rolling, it's gleefully on target, thanks primarily to the mordantly cocky Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as a latecomer to the superhero gang; her secret weapon is a bowling ball in which her dead father's head is encased. The comic chemistry between these two is fierce, and when you add the dryly funny Macy and the endearing Azaria (who finally gets a chance to let loose with his comic gifts), it's a hilarious joyride. Too bad that the gas tank is only half-full; this stunning cast deserves a first-rate vehicle. With Tom Waits as a weapons expert, Claire Forlani as the requisite babe, and Paul Reubens as the Spleen, the world's most flatulent superhero. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews of Mystery Men
Stupid--But Hilarious Ok, perhaps I'm just a little bit more enthusiatic about this movie then the average person. But it really is a humerous movie. Basically, the plot quite simple. The city's favorite superhero, Captain Amazing, is kidnapped by the bad guy, Casanova Frankenstein (as a result of his own publicity stunt). Someone has to save him. It becomes a job for the Mystery Men. The original three, Mr. Furious, the Shovler, and the Blue Raja, recruit Invisible Boy, the Spleen, and the Bowler, and along with the help of a mysterious, legendary hero and a mad scientist, save the city from Casanova. Now Captain Amazing fate...well, I'll let you see it for yourself. It's humerous, though. Sure, it's filled with bad puns (Blue Raja, master of silverware, frequently says things like "i shall fork-give you" or "see you spoon"). But if you aren't expecting some intellegent, award-winning masterpiece, you'll be happy with the movie. One think I don't understand is the PG-13 rating. Perhaps it's for violence, although it's not really that violent. The language is actually relatively tame, considering most movies today. So it really makes a nice movie for pre-teens as well as the older crowd.
No Mystery As To Why It's Brilliant
In recent years, there have been certain films that act as a divining rod between those who get the proverbial "joke" and those who "don't." Tim Burton's largely underappreciated "Mars Attacks!" serves as an example. Now, we have "Mystery Men," quite possibly the best comic-book movie adaptation since the first "Batman" and certainly a comedy worthy of the box office returns that a lesser movie like "There's Something About Mary" received. Unfortunately, it didn't have that kind of random-chance luck. Running neck-and-neck with "Magnolia" for Best Ensemble Cast of 1999, "Mystery Men" fires one-liners and subtle puns faster than an AK-47, telling the story about some less-than-super superheroes. Every performance in the film is nothing short of hysterical; Hank Azaria darn near steals the show as the fork-wielding Blue Raja. Paul Reubens, as the Spleen, is top drawer, which we haven't seen from him since the first Pee-Wee Herman movie and William H. Macy's facial expressions are worth the price of the film. His henpecked Shoveler is the closest thing this film has to a straight man... which is still far off. Not to mention Ben Stiller in rare form as Mr. Furious, the very definition of "all bark, no bite" and Janeane Garofalo in a less sardonic role than we're used to as the revenge-minded Bowler. Are you excited yet? If not, don't even bother seeing it; you clearly just "don't get it." For those of you that know why you should be excited, go out and get "Mystery Men." I dare you not to hurt yourself laughing.
Hysterical and very Art Deco!
This film is really special. It's not some low budget comedy movie but it's a mix between Batman, Seinfeld and Austin Powers, an overall bizarre combination!
I really like the part when Stiller jumps on the badguys' car and tries to scratch the label off! LOL!
If you really want to give yourself a break and indulge in some innocent childish fun you should watch this movie.
