Customer Reviews of My Suitor
New Wave delight from Kahimi Well it's not cheap, clearly, but Kahimi Karie fans are probably used to bankrupting themselves to acquire her releases. It is though a very fine record.
Somewhat of a "concept" release, Kahimi covers all new wave tracks in her own unique style (if you're not familiar with her work imagine a Japanese schoolgirl whispering her vocals to a nicely produced, alternative-y backing track).
On My Suitor Kahimi brings her individual perspective to songs by The Lilac Time, Weekend, Virginia Astley, The Dolly Mixture, X-Ray Spex, Holger Czukay and others. The X-Ray Specs cover (Warrior in Woolworths) is a hidden extra track.
I especially love what's she's done with "The Photo Song" and "Drumbeat For Baby". A treasure, much like Ms Karie herself.
FROM THE TREE WORLD
Time for the Great Virginia Astley Revival. Here's the 2nd of her songs to be covered in as many years.
"Melt The Snow" is Virginia in her usual turf The Dream World.
And some poem somewhere about the trees mocking the dejected lover as she wanders the forest "where the snow is gonna know" as she "sends a message over there".
So its fitting that a singer with a childish voice like Virginia's has made a version of this song. And one from Japan as well. Virginia is worshipped in Japan.
Me I love cover versions but not the shallow clapped out mainstream stuff ("Just the way you are") unless the artiste reconstructs them.
And especially if they are little known songs never covered before
beauuuuutiful
Kahimi`s cover album is short, exclusively expensive but too beautiful to resist.
Bizarre, strangely out of tune...but always with a unique blend of harmonies. The title track is one of the most haunting tracks I 've heard in recent time. melt the snow is utterly sweet ....at first...then it goes places beyond. get this album now! Not a dance album...but who cares!
