Customer Reviews of My First Reading Adventure - I Want To Read!
Good reading headstart for pre-K I have to admit that I was totally naive at what I pictured my daughter learning in Kindergarten. Gone were the "Letter People" (Mr. M- for meatball and Miss I. for itch come to mind), and in it's place were addition and subtraction, letter and sentence writing, and reading, reading, reading. I felt like a shame of a Mother, sending my daughter into Kindergarten unprepared and innocent. Thankfully, she took to it quickly, and my feelings of guilt can surface for another Oprah moment sometime around Jr. High age.
Now that our son will start Kindergarten this year, I am determined to give him the headstart we didn't give our daughter. DK's "I Want To Read!" CD-ROM is very basic, and that's just what a beginner reader needs. A typewriter that sings the alphabet has 3 missing letters, and as the song is sung, your child must click on the next correct letter (sounds easy, but you'd be surprised how "before and after" with letters and numbers trips kids up). The CD also has a "words that rhyme" section, and teaches kids to recognize basic words like "hat", "dog", and "run". There are also stories they can read along with (the line being read is highlighted so your child can follow along), and he/she will receive a reward "sticker" for each activity they've finished (in true DK sticker book fashion). When they've completed an entire sticker page, they can click on a section to get a "reward song". Educational and fun. Again, the DK CD-ROMs must be run in 265-color bit, rather than a 16-24 true bit color form, which gives the appearance a grainy tinge, so don't forget to change it back when your child is done.
