Mama Madonna returned from the spiritual world and got her groove thing goin' once again for Music. Flanked by Ray of Light's tried-and-true producer William Orbit and a French newcomer, DJ and producer Mirwais, Madonna pours her heart out on the dancefloor, combining self-revealing lyrics with retro-electro beats. Reinventing herself as an urban cowgirl pimpette, Madonna once again sets the standard for mainstream pop, which will probably only be topped by her next release. --Beth Massa

The Queen of Pop
Madonna's album, "Music" is a sort of tribute to the craft that made her the biggest selling artist of the world. Music is her specialty, starting in 1982 with her self-penned "Everybody." The latest album brings back memories on why we love Madonna: the music that she makes!

Her album contains twelve tracks (Australian edition) and starts with the title track. It was like listening to Holiday in 1983, Into the Groove in 1985, Vogue in 1990 and Fever in 1993. Madonna is inviting everybody to celebrate life with music, the universal language!

Other tracks are just as great as her previous album, Ray of Light. Impressive Instant instantly impresses you (especially the remix version), with similarly-grooved Runaway Lover, Amazing (a Beautiful Stranger sequel), American Pie and Dont Tell Me. Ballads also haunt you: Paradise (Not for Me), I Deserve It, What It Feels Like for a Girl, and the best of the bunch is Gone.

No doubt, comparisons to her 80's work is inevitable, but Madonna is an artist who continues to grow in all aspects because she loves her craft and her determination (after two decades) is as strong as ever. Yes, Holiday may have started it all, Like a Virgin is a classic, Papa Dont Preach is vintage, Like a Prayer is simply glorious, Erotica is an outrageous attempt, Take a Bow is simply incredible, Evita means she really can do it, and Frozen may be one of her greatest songs ever, but Madonna chose to move on than rest on her laurels. She is not afraid, she is artistic, and she is innovative.

Proof: the Music album!

Madonna will never have a comeback album, because she NEVER left us even for a single year during the last two decades! She has always been with us. Unsure? Count all your Madonna albums!

Long live the Queen!

Typical Madonna- NOT!
When the first words of the album are spoken "Hey Mr.DJ, put a record on. I wanna dance with my baby.", you know that this will not be a run of the mill pop album. The funky title track kicks the abum off to a radical and musically challenging start, and unlike "Ray Of Light" it does not set a precedent for the album as every song has a totally dfferent feel. After the funky, subtle dance feel of "Music" you are then lead into the in your face thumping dance tune that is "Impressive Instant." This is my favourite track on the album and you have never heard anything like this in your life! Madonna sings well over the biggest beat which makes "Ray Of Light" sound like "Cherish." Then you are followed by a stomping dico bass and is brought to life by William Orbit in the first of his three tracks. The sound of this and the previous track are so utterly different but they work together and they blend seemlessly- beat that if you can Britney! "I Deserve It" follows which is a blatant tribute to Guy, but do we actually care as it is a beautifully sung, beautifully written, beautifully produced piece of folk inspired balladry which would be as much as home on a Beth Orton CD. "Amazing" follows which is an upbeat dance track that will be heard at clubs and parties by thye end of 2001- for sure! William Orbit takes the production credit for this and this is a truly banging tune. "Nobody's Perfect" offers an interesting perspective on fidelity and i think Madonna wants us to know that she is just like the rest of us. The song has an uncomforable feel to it and this is maily due to the precision production from Mirwais. "what it feels like..." is a beautiful ballad where we find out that she really can sing- well. "Paradise..." sounds like a track by "Air" and Madonnas breathy vocals i9n both English and french manage still to sound cool. "Gone" sounds like a hip country-folk song but has that Madonna feel- with the line "Selling out is not my thing, giving up, i dont think so.." we agree love! Best track on the album is probably "Dont Tell Me" which is something you would never have thought Madonna would record- its funky R&B with fantastic jerky production- Madonna sings beautifully with a voice that sounds like Sheryl Crow on speed. Every song is great, well written and beautifully and Madonnas introspective lyrics provide her greatest album yet, which takes some doing. Always inventive, never boring- Typical madonna you might say, but youd be wrong! She just gets better- beat that Britney!

Madonna and Techno- the best partnership since PB&J
On "Music", Madonna's continues on the path set by her last CD, "Ray of Light", yet the result is anything but repetitive. On "Ray of Light", Madonna took on the limp genre of techno music, a world where generic fast beats back up meaningless lyrics and artists rarely outlive one hit wonder status. Yet on "Ray of light", with beautiful and unique beats produced by Mirwais Ahmadai, Madonna proved that techno music can be meaningful. She took the techno ditty formula to its ultimate height with the soaring title track and filled songs like "Nothing really matters" with intense emotional meaning. On "Music", Ahmadia is back and along with him his techno beats and Madonna brings a new emotional state to this album. "Music" and "Don't tell me" were the big hits off this album and they're perfectly delightful ditties. Madonna's voice is still reaping the benefits from the vocal lessons she took for the film "Evita" and as on "Light", she's able to manipulate her small range to turn the songs out. Yet it's the other tracks that help this record keep its shine years later. On "Paradise" Madonna indulges herself in over dramatic speeches in both French and English but somehow it works and the playfully delivered chorus "your paradise is not for me" proves again that for all her consumerist shallowness, there is more to Madonna. "Gone" also shows great strength, as Madonna soulfully sings about following your dreams. What really made "Light" and "Music" so interesting and artistic, was the deep regret Madonna reveals. There's something very imploring and even human that as she enters her 40s, Madonna regrets some of the shock and scandal she indulged in at the beginning of her career. On "Nobody's perfect" and "I deserve it", both backed intermittently by acoustics and electronics, Madonna tells of how her faults drove a lover away. Yet, while the few happy revelations on "Light" came from the birth of Madonna's daughter, on this record, Madonna's new husband, Guy Ritchie, provides her with more cheerful fodder. On "Amazing" backed by an airy thumping, Madonna sings girlishly "It's amazing what a boy can do" and her mature joy seeps through to the listener. But for all this, the most genius song may be "what it feels like for a girl". The beat is sweet and catchy and the lyrics are filled with sensual descriptions of the female physique. Yet just when Madonna has you thinking the song is a crude sexual exploitation, leading up to the chorus she lets loose the lines "strong inside but you don't know it/ good little girls they never show it/ when you open up your mouth to speak could you be a little weak" with deep hurt ringing through her voice. This is what makes Madonna one of the most unique pop stars ever. For all they're false claims that skimpy outfits equal feminism, Madonna proves here that Britney and Christina don't know the meaning of that word and legitimizes her lasting presence in pop music.
