Customer Reviews of Music of the Middle Ages
Should be Out of Print Of all the videos that have been discontinued over the years, I am astounded that this one is still available. The problems with this production are numerous, but I will point out the most egregious. First, the performances are not even up to the standard of the year in which the video was shot. The singing is often out of tune and the instrumental playing is very amateurish. Second, we are led to believe the nuns and monks lived together in featureless monasteries and sang chant, difficult polyphony, and Landini ballatas! Even the scenes of supposed nobility enjoying a musical evening are set in a castle with almost no interior decoration. Finally, some of the instruments presented as "medieval" were probably completely unknown until the late 15th century (sackbut and tenor crumhorn). As an instructor of music history, I encourage everyone to stay away from this video, and I hope that eventually someone will produce a high-quality video of music of the middle ages that examines cultural context more closely and makes some attempt to make the different genres more clear.
Music of the middle ages
The video "Our Musical heritage: Music of the Middle Ages" is a very old video production. It seem this video was prepared with very low budget. It has poor representation, poor images and poor creativity. It does not present real instruments, so it is not well documentated. It lacks of historical contents, it does not present all the spectrum of medieval music. Spanish Jewish medieval music is not present as well as mozarabic music and or intrumentation. The recording is also very poor. It would be a good idea for film makers to create a well documentated video on this topic. The plastic appearance of the film is so old it jumps on your TV.
