Customer Reviews of Music of Africa
Music of Africa - Review by ethnomusicologist This video is not good. Although I am an expert on West African music, I would have to say that this does not contribute much to understanding the spirit of African music.
I would recommend instead Jembefola - a good video about a Guinea drummer and his return to his village. Excellent.
Save your money!
I've been using this video in my music classroom for a few years, mainly for lack of anything better. The quality is horrible, the narrator's English is hard to understand, and the audio is very muddled. The content is fine, but it's a real struggle to hear what's going on. Someone PLEASE come up with a better video series for world music!
Low quality and content; save your money
This video was transferred from a movie. The film looks as though it was probably shot in the mid to late 1960's. The brightness of the video transfer is very dark, and as a result, it is oten difficult to see the picture. This video is less than 20 minutes long, and although it is called "Musc of Africa" the video focuses solely on the music and instruments of Ghana. The sound quality is generally very poor with a lot of film noise in the recording, and the sound is not always perfectly in sync with the picture. While some good educational concepts are presented, this video is definitely not worth ... I would maybe pay ... for this, it anything at all. I only wish i could have viewed this before i bought it. :-( Don't make the sae mistake I did. Save your money... there's got to be something better out there, although i haven't found it yet....
