Customer Reviews of Murnau, (Shadows Book)
The Biography of the Great Pioneer! German born author Lotte Eisner adapts an interesting biography into the life of F.W. Murnau, giving fans of his films an interesting read into the influences that enhanced German Expressionism as we know it today. There are eerie comparisons to Renaissance paintings and ancient myths of the macabre throughout. Book has many screenshots from Murnau's films such as THE LAST LAUGH, SUNRISE, and NOSFERATU most importantly.
Also included as a special surprise is the original screenplay to NOSFERATU, with an actual copy of a transcript written in German, and the films' original intertitles. Highly recommended, no matter how hard it may be to obtain a copy!
the pictures are nice.
This rare and expensive little book is very hard to find. So little(really) is written about the fabulous F.W.Murnau, who left this world so young. Thanks to Amazon, I ordered an old copy from a book store in Toronto. It finally arrived. The black-and-white pictures are fabulous! I couldn't wait to read it. Sadly, my ability to read French is sorely lacking...
you feel your watching german silent classics while reading
As a film-maker, Murnau's films have been textbooks for my work in features. Eisner's book made me see "Nosferatu""Last Laugh" and "Sunrise' clearer. It showed how Noferatu was not just a "cool horror film", but an important step in growing film grammar. Read the book once, in 1983, and haven't forgotten it.
