Customer Reviews of Muriel's Wedding
Terrific comedy-drama from Australia Life should be as wonderful as an ABBA song. Unfortunately for Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) it's not. Chunky, disliked by her so-called friends ("You bring us down"), stuck in the not-happening town of Porpoise Spit, in a family where her father calls everyone "useless" and her mother seems lost in depression, Muriel can only escape to her room and listen to her favorite group, ABBA (their infectious, dance-pop hits permeate the soundtrack). A secretarial school reject, Muriel has but a single goal in life: marriage.
"I'm going to get married and I'm going to be a success," she tells her mother, right before stealing the family's money and blowing it on a vacation with her "friends" who did not invite her, and are shocked and angered that she's followed them. She doesn't find a husband on the trip, but she is reunited with Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), a plucky high school acquaintance, and the two strike up a real friendship.
Written and directed by P.J. Hogan (a name to watch), "Muriel's Wedding" seesaws rapidly between comedy and tragedy. The film won Australia's equivalent of our Best Picture Oscar. And Toni Collette (who reportedly gained over 40 pounds for the role) picked up their Best Actress award. (Funny how Robert De Niro's weight-gain for "Raging Bull" was so much more publicized and admired.)
I really liked how Muriel transforms herself here. Both on the inside and outside, she just gets more beautiful as the film progresses to it's strong conclusion.
Watch this movie, and then again, and again....
This is one of my favorite movies that I can pop in on any given Saturday and watch for the ump-teenth time! At first viewing it is a typical quirky Aussie film with all the bizare characters and plot devices you've come to expect. On a closer viewing not only is it hilarious at every turn, it also depicts very real and very difficult true-life situations such as infidelity, cancer, and suicide. Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, The Boys) is almost unrecognizable (due to a self imposed significant weight gain) yet brilliant as Muriel- an ABBA and marriage obsessed "big boned" girl. Her family is basically worthless and detestable, despite her father pointing out Muriel as being the "loser" of the family. Rachel Griffiths (award winner for her role in Showtime's Six Feet Under) is outstanding as Muriel's one true ally. Their ABBA lip-sync is forever forefront in my mind whenever I hear Dancing Queen and/or Waterloo! This movie is just plain fun and well worth watching again, and again, and again! "Muriel! You're terrible!"
Porpoise Spit Sheila's Move It On Over To Big City Sidney!
Australian writer/director P.J. Hogan's modern masterpiece, "Muriel's Wedding" serves up wedding cake with wheelchairs, confetti with cancer, ABBA with ardor, sweetness with stealing, and more importantly friends with foes in this one of a kind black comedy.
"Muriel's Wedding" not only launched P.J. Hogan's directing and writing career but gave a leg up to Toni Collette who agreed to pack on 30 lbs. for the once in a lifetime role of Muriel Heslop, citizen of small town Porpoise Spit, Australia. Rachel Griffiths from "Six Feet Under" also got her first shot playing Muriel's friend, wild child and general black sheep of Porpoise Spit, Rhonda Epinstalk. Rhonda and Muriel escape the small town and small people of Porpoise Spit for the big city lights and acceptance of Sidney, Australia.
A low self-esteemed wedding obsessed wannabe, Muriel lies, cheats and steals her way to her ultimate goal. Getting HITCHED! At least that's what Muriel thinks she desires, but all she wants is to truly be accepted by friends, family and her WHOLE world. Muriel's whole existence is based on "Why Can't It Be Me? Why Can't I Be The One?"
Muriel's parents, Bill and Betty Heslop, played by Aussie actors Bill Hunter and Jeanie Drynan both turn in excellent and believable performances. Especially Jeanie Drynan as the put upon mother who unconditionally loves her children and only wants to think the best of them.
Also featured are four judgemental and witchy women who are Muriel and Rhonda's former high school classmates. Some of the greatest comedy scenes take place between the six gals and are hilarious!
The film ALSO has a GREAT 70's soundtrack with the likes of:
Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes
We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters
Tide Is High by Blondie
Waterloo by ABBA
I Go to Rio by Peter Allen
I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself by Dusty Springfield
Dancing Queen by ABBA
I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do by ABBA
and Happy Together by The Turtles
I highly recommend this film not just as a "chick flick" but a great and terrific movie that examines not only the comedic side of life but of true friendship, love and death...
Happy Watching And Go Porpoise Spit High!
