Customer Reviews of Murder in Cold Blood
A Worthwhile Purchase The only reason I rated this three stars despite the fact that I really enjoyed it, ... I was surprised by the deviation from the story presented in "In Cold Blood." Although Capote's book was lauded as a non-fiction novel, I guess I took everything in it as factual. A minor point would be that in this presentation, the murdered family is found by a hired hand on the property, not by Nancy's friend. A much larger issue is that ... Hickock and Perry intended from the conception of the robbery to kill everyone in the house. This is treated as absolute fact, although everything I've read presents this as a matter for debate. So, I'm just wondering where they got their research??
I really got a lot out of this, though. I thought the audio confession of Hickock was very interesting and also the interviews with the law enforcement officers who worked the case.
I'm definitely glad that I bought it.
A Compelling Documentary
This is a short, but hard hitting documentary in keeping with the high quality productions of Bill Kurtis's "American Justice" series. The focus of the documentary is, of course, the murder of the Herbert Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas on November 15, 1959. This crime was the focus of Truman Capote's celebrated book, "In Cold Blood."
The documentary focuses on the investigation of the Clutter murders and the capture of the killers, Perry Edward Smith and Richard Eugene Hickock, who were executed for the crime in 1965. There is an interesting audiotape in the documentary which is from Hicock's confession, and surviving members of the law enforcement team from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Garden City (Kansas) Police are featured in interviews. There is precious little information provided about the victims, beyond what is already known. The documentary may have been even more compelling than it already is by fleshing out the lives of the Clutter family.
WARNING: The documentary contains photos from the crime scene which are shown more than once. Although these photos are in black and white (such were police photos of the time), they are extremely graphic and disturbing, particularly the close up photos of 15 year old Kenyon Clutter and 16 year old Nancy Clutter.
All in all, this is a fascinating look at at an infamous crime. The documentary is most effective if you've read Capote's book, but also stands up well on it's own.
Best Of American Justice!!
This documentary of the killing of the Clutter family in November 1959 is rather graphic with photographs of the deceased victims. It also lives up to the title of the show American Justice, the justice being that the killers were hanged for thier crimes. This video includes footage of the house, the family in earlier years, interviews of the men involved with solving the case, and the trial. This documentary is well done. Good for people who forget to lock thier doors or windows at night. An entire family is murdered because of an unlocked door. This video also has the taped confession of Hickock. Great video for anyone interested in the crime.
