Customer Reviews of Mulholland Drive
Organized Confusion! A lot of reviewers put this film on their "Best of 2001" list, and with very good reason. Although the story and plot get really twisty, and occaissionally defy their own parameters,I think the critics just loved the performances so much, the rest could be overlooked! Yes,it's definitely a David Lynch film, but it's definitely a whole different animal. Laura Elena Harring,Naomi Watts, and Justin Theroux, all put in top notch performance in a tale of Amnesia,Murder,Blackmail,Hollywood, and a Lynch favourite: Duality. What is real and what is imagined? What do you see? Lynch supplies several clues in the DVD insert...good luck. I think what makes this film such a paradox, and hard to pin down,is it's history. "Mulholland Drive" was originally a television pilot, and it didn't get bought. That is why the film introduces numerous characters and sub-plots that don't get fully realized in the full length film.( He later brought back Harring & Watts to shoot additional footage, for the theatrical version.) I give Lynch a lot of credit for making the effort, and creating this odd and amusing little creature,it's fun & quirky, and you'll think about it. With a supporting cast featuring Michael J.Anderson,Ann Miller, and Billy Ray Cyrus as the Pool Guy,how could you not enjoy it?
What? But wait.. what?
I'm optimistic that someday it'll all make just some sense to me. No doubt, this movie will redefine the genre of weird movies.
I'll admit that I had high expectations to begin with, so I might have been taken aback, although that seems to be the general feel of the movie. I was mesmerized, startled, ambivalent, confused, all in the first ten minutes. I expected to see something unique, dream-like, maybe even subtly profound, but the first thirty minutes or so seemed like a parody...characters who like shockingly like actors, cartoonish car crash, goofy detectives, spooky homeless monster man behind the fast-food restaurant. On the one hand, I can see that maybe its meant to make the impression that in LA, everything looks like a TV show, and is a parody of Hollywood. On the other hand, I still feel that, any way you put it, that Lynch is eccentric, genius, unique, subtle, transcendental - he's still laughing at you - ... He's not only ridiculing Hollywood filmmakers, he's also surreptitiously mocking it's film viewers.
That said, the film is amazing. It's funny (the scene with Adam and the Cowboy has to be a top comedy moment in film history), and yet you'll be surprised that there is drama (albeit, far far removed when you're still struggling to comprehend), and mysterious. After a while, after immersing myself in the aura for a while, the acting became really quite wonderful, and the setting increasingly mystical. There are really several stages that you have to go through to finally 'realize' this movie.
I can't say that this is one of my favorites yet. I'll still have to study it, and even so, it's incomparable to any other type of movie that I've seen, I don't know where or how to place it. It is an unsettling and haunting film.
a beautiful masterwork
This film has a haunting beauty that is akin to experiencing Klee upon the first time. The mystery and sensuality wrecks havoc of all your senses. I relished the experience.
