A quintet of nearsighted misadventures for Mr. Magoo
Mr. Magoo was a clumsy, crusty, incredibly nearsighted, loveable old coot who first appeared in the 1949 UPA short "Ragtime Bear." Memorably voiced by Jim Backus, who later achieved visual fame as Thurston Howell III on "Gilligan's Island, Mr. Magoo cartoons twice won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject. However, when UPA was bought out at the end of the Fifties, 130 cheaply made-for-TV cartoons were produced for syndication, the first of which appeared on November 7, 1960. Magoo's character was considerably softened for the TV shorts, which each ran five minutes, and the nearly blind little man was joined by a supporting cast that included his nephew Waldo (who was featured in the theatrical shorts), Mother Magoo, and Millie. This ninth volume of syndicated cartoons from this period offers up five more episodes: "Magoo's Roof Goof," "Teenage Magoo," "Cyrano Magoo," "Magoo's Surprise Party," and "Magoo's Dutch Treat." In terms of quality these efforts certainly do not compare to the wonderful "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" (1962), which heralded the character's revitalization and inspired the "Mr. Magoo Literary Classics" for which he is better and more deservedly remembered. Final note: this tape's "Cyrano Magoo" should not be confused with the far superior effort done for that later series.
