Customer Reviews of Mr. Magoo Show, Vol. 8
Together Again: Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing Boing! Mr. Magoo cartoons twice won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject: in 1954 for "When Magoo Flew" and in 1956 for "Magoo's Puddle Jumper." But when UPA was bought out at the end of the Fifties, 130 cheaply made-for-TV cartoons were produced for syndication, the first of which appeared on November 7, 1960. Magoo's character was considerably softened for the TV shorts, which each ran five minutes, and the nearly blind little man was joined by a supporting cast that included his nephew Waldo, Mother Magoo, and Millie. This eighth volume of syndicated cartoons from this period offers up five more episodes: "Piggy Bank Magoo," "Magoo Meets McBoing Boing," "Robin Hood Magoo," "Fuel in the Sun," and "First Aid Magoo." In terms of quality these efforts certainly do not compare to the wonderful "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" (1962), which heralded the character's revitalization and inspired the "Mr. Magoo Literary Classics" for which he is better and more deservedly remembered. However, this particular volume does have a meeting between Magoo and another famous cartoon character of the day, Gerald McBoing Boing, who went on to "play" Tiny Tim in "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol", which qualifies as at least a curiosity if not a treat. Finally, as always, there is the wonderful vocal work of Jim Backus as Mr. Magoo.
