Customer Reviews of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House
They don't make 'em like this anymore A comedy you never tire of watching. That Cary Grant usually plays himself in every movie is excusable when you are are great as he was!! In this he is the quintessential Grant ... befuddled, self-deprecating, vulnerable ... and he has never been better or funnier. The rest of the cast, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas, are excellent and lend firm support. <

>This is a sort of a preview of the hit TV show, "Green Acres." In this film, you can see the locals out-smarting the supposed sophisticated city folks (dig the exchange between Grant and the guy who is drilling his well). And when Myrna Loy describes the shade of blue she wants for her sewing room ("not quite as light as a robin's egg", etc.) and the interior designer pretends to listen carefully, and mutters "un-huh", then whispers to his associate "Two quarts of blue". And when they are told that the farmhouse they bought is structually unsound and has to be torn down, they do so, only to be told that they had to have a permit or something before they did it! The whole movie is like this, leading lambs to the slaughter. But afterall the money is spent and time wasted, they finally get their dream house, and they consider it worth it. But getting it is definitely not half the fun. But the entire movie certainly is. Buy this. Especially if you are a Cary Grant fan.
Great movie but...
We were very anxious to get this classic CG movie. but the movie was in black and white. not color as advertized.
The original is the best
"The Money Pit" was based on this movie, but Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas cannot be replaced, even by the talented Tom Hanks. This movie is a classic that is the equal to all the great romantic comedies of our day, including "Sleepless in Seattle", and "You've Got Mail".This movie was made just after the 2nd world war, millions were chasing the American dream of a new home, the baby boomers were on the way, and many must have been inspired by this movie to go after that dream with your heart and not your head.
