The Real Foreigner Returns....But Is It Their Last?
Thank goodness lead singer Lou Gramm returned to Foreigner for this album. The band's star frontman had left the group for a solo career after 1987's "Inside Information." They replaced him with new singer Johnny Edwards, and recorded 1991's "Unusual Heat." But the album was both a commercial & artistic disappointment, and all Lou Gramm managed to get out of his solo career was one lone hit single, "Midnight Blue," and not much else. I guess both parties realised the error of their ways, because, very thankfully, Gramm and Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones ultimately made up, and reformed Foreigner for 1995's "Mr. Moonlight." And while the album isn't Foreigner's masterpiece, it sure blows "Unusual Heat" right out of the water, thanks in no small part to the great return of Lou Gramm to the fold, both as lead singer and co-songwriter. I had a big smile on my face listening to "Mr. Moonlight" for the first time---this is the REAL Foreigner that I know & love.By this time, bassist Rick Wills & drummer Dennis Elliott had both split, so they were replaced by Bruce Turgon & Jeff Jacobs, plus various session players. The resulting "Mr. Moonlight" is a great return to form for Foreigner, with excellent songs all throughout, just like the band made in their glory days up through 1987. Highlights: the opening "Under The Gun" has Foreigner throwing down the gauntlet with tremendous rockin' power, "Until The End Of Time" is an instant classic power ballad, and the band get totally down & dirty with "Big Dog," with a gloriously sleazy vibe and ominous lead vocals (but is it Gramm or Jones at the mike? I can't be sure). "All I Need To Know" has wonderful melody, "Hole In My Soul" is a strong acoustic-flavored thumper, and the final song, "Hand On My Heart," is both beautiful & soulful. The hooks are memorable, the band's musicianship cooks, Mick Jones serves up some tasty guitar licks, and, God bless him, Lou Gramm's powerful voice is firmly at the forefront of Foreigner once again. Like I said in my review of "Unusual Heat," Foreigner *needed* Lou, and "Mr. Moonlight" is the proof of that.Unfortunately, even with Lou Gramm back onboard, "Mr. Moonlight," for all of it's great material, followed "Unusual Heat" to the commercial dud department, and gave the band no hit singles. I can only guess that the whole rock music biz had changed by 1995, and just wasn't the same since Foreigner ruled the roost in the 70's & 80's. Nirvana had already come & gone, and radio & music buyers in general just weren't interested in "Mr. Moonlight," which is a shame. Although Foreigner continues to tour occasionally, there's been no new recorded material since the release of "Mr. Moonlight" eight years ago (at the time I'm writing this). If "Mr. Moonlight" really is the final Foreigner album, then at least the band has gone out on top with a fine record. "Mr. Moonlight" is a great Foreigner album. And thank you Mick, Lou, and the boys for all of the great music you've given your fans, myself included. I'll be rocking to your albums until the end of time!

Relief in the mid-'90's
I love just about everything this band has ever done, and this is no exception. What a blessed relief it was to hear this album in the middle of the alternative rock dominance of the time. The melodies are astounding, and Lou Gramm could still belt 'em out at this point--although his voice was clearly a bit lower by this time. "Under The Gun" was the first track I heard--on rock radio. It is a classic Foreigner rock song. I sometimes wish the album had more rockers like this, but it is impossible not to fall in love with many of the other songs. "Until The End Of Time" is an unbelievable ballad that should have been a huge it; for some reason it barely dented the charts! "All I Need To Know" is a heart-felt touching and yet somewhat uptempo song about a friendship on the verge of becoming a romance. "Running The Risk" is another anthem that just tugs on the heart strings. All of the songs on this album have that Foreigner touch--even if it isn't quite the classic "rocking" sound of the old stuff. Still very much a recommended listen for long-time Foreigner fans.

They're back! Sort of
Mr. Moonlight (1995.) Foreigner's eighth album.

The nineties started on a rather negative note for Foreigner. To start off the new year, they released an album with a singer other than Lou Gramm, who had left the band to pursue a solo career. The album (although I liked it pretty well, and several others did,) bombed big time. The band soon disbanded. Fortunately though, the band reunited (with Gramm) not long after this flop. And reunited, the band released their eighth studio album, Mr. Moonlight, in 1995. Read on for my review.

If you're expecting a straight-up classic rock album that's a carbon copy of everything Foreigner shelled out in the seventies and eighties, you're probably going to be disappointed. But if you're a fan of the band with an open mind, you're bound to be satisfied. With this release, the band shifts their sound in a more pop/adult contemporary direction. However, this is NOT a bad thing by any means. The Unusual Heat album demonstrated beautifully how much the band could benefit from trying new things, and here they do it again. Rockers are few and far between on this album; most of the tracks are pop-oriented. While shifting a sound like this from a rock-based sound to a pop-based one has killed many bands, Foreigner actually benefits from the experience! For the most part, every track follows a similar style, but manages to maintain its own sense of individuality. In the end, this is a very good album, even if it's not what you'd expect from this band.

THIS TEXT REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN CD RELEASE OF THE ALBUM, AND WAS WRITTEN ON MAY 25, 2004. Unlike the first four Foreigner albums, nothing the band recorded past 1981 has gotten the remastering and rereleasing treatment. This sucks, because these versions of the albums not only don't sound as good as the remasters of classic four albums, they also are out of print and difficult to find. If the record company can remaster and rerelease Foreigner, Double Vision, Head Games, and 4, and put bonus tracks on them, why can't they do the same for Agent Provocateur, Inside Information, Unusual Heat, and Mr. Moonlight? And who wants to hunt down these albums if their sound quality is weaker than the remasters and they don't contain bonus tracks? Obviously, no one but Foreigner die-hards.

Sure, Mr. Moonlight is a different kind of album, but it's still very good. I personally like the band's 1991 release, Unusual Heat, better than this album (even though it lacked Gramm), but that's just me. Give this one a listen with an open mind if you're a Foreigner fan - it shouldn't fail to please.
