Customer Reviews of Movielines Hollywood Life
Entertainment Magazine Reader I wish I could say that this is an entertaining magazine because there are not many magazines that cover strictly movies. Sadly, this magazine is nothing but fluff. Maybe I am saying this because this magazine is read mostly by professionals in the movie business (according to the Princeton Review) and I am no movie star (yet) so it is not ideal. For those outside the movie business stick with Entertainment Weekly. Leave this clutter alone (unless you've hit the big time).
Change in format and focus has totally hurt this magazine
Once upon a time"Movieline" was one of the few magazines focusing on movies that provided consistently candid profiles of Hollywood's A-List, and not the usual fluff self-congratulatory pieces that appear in most magazines. I remember reading a profile on an up and comer named Jennifer Lopez (yes J. Lo.) and the interviewer actually got her to dish on other female actors and it got her into a heap of trouble. Lopez' (wrong) but candid comments about Gweneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz would have no place in the newly titled "Movieline's Hollywood Life." You'd also never see the great behind the scene articles that chronicled famous scenes or gave tid bits that you'd never see in "Premiere," "People," or "EW." I remember reading a funny piece on Sharon Stone (always a great interview) in which it was chronicled how much the crew of one of her early movies hated her so much, they they urinated in her bathwater in a key scene in said movie. What was classic was not only the act, but how matter if fact Sharon was about the incident.
I just read the March/April 2004 issue of this magazine and it seems like a beyond pale version of what used to be a pretty good magazine. The new lay-out is confusing, as is it's intent or target. I assume that the changes came from needing to boost sales, but I can't conceive of why anyone would pick this magazine over others that do what they seem to be attempting to do, so much better.
The above-mentioned issue was "The Fashion Issue" and there was so much fashion junk that it made it look like a high school version of "W." Although there were a couple of marginally interesting interviews (thank God Stephen Rebello is still around), I went through the magazine in less than 1/2 an hour as what did not look like "W" looked like a lesser version one of the many interchangeable lifestyle magazines, while the rest felt like one of those magazines that you get for free.
I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because I am giving it the benefit of the doubt in that maybe the next issue will improve content-wise. I miss "Movieline" as there is now a huge void in in depth movie magazines that don't look like the product of the P.R. person of every person appearing or discussed in the magazine.
You could do worse for the money
This is by no means a great magazine. There is a lot of silly filler that I don't really enjoy. However, I do often like reading the cover articles and their pictures are beautiful. That's actually the draw to the magazine - big, colorful pictures that aren't always just half-naked women. (They have those, too, but you wouldn't mistake this for Maxim)
There also isn't too much advertising, which is very nice.
However, if you can only subscribe to one entertainment magazine, go for Entertainment Weekly or Rolling Stone. They're really a lot better.
