In our tests, we didn't encounter any problems with interference or with finding a free channel to talk on. The reception was clear, without too much static. We especially liked the scan lock, which scans through the channels until it finds an active channel. Scan lock automatically locks the channel in, letting you either listen discreetly or talk with other parties.
Most of the buttons are intuitive enough to figure out, although we do suggest a quick read of the manual in order to fully appreciate the power of the TalkAbout. The placement of the talk button, which is inconveniently located in the dead center of the radio, makes it difficult to speak while holding down the button. You can solve this problem by attaching a microphone to the radio and using the VOX (voice activation) feature, which allows hands-free talking.
The TalkAbout 280 SLK is a great choice for anyone needing a powerful two-way radio for activities such as hiking, skiing, taking road trips, or shopping.
Pros:
- Impressive two-mile range
- Clear reception without static
- Small enough for a pocket
- Appealing design
Cons:
- Inconveniently located talk button

Customer Reviews of Motorola T280 2-Way Radio (Baltic Purple)
Great value, even better with rebate! Got the radio for a family trip to the beach and it worked great. Didn't have a problem with too many other people using the frequencies, but appreciated the 38 sub channels. I especially liked the large talk button- made it easy to find when communicating. We had some other radios with us with small same size buttons which made it harder to find to talk. The range was fine, as we also used it in our cars on our way to the beach. Cheaper and easier than making cell phone calls to each other all the time. I also recommend getting the Aquapac waterproof cover. The covers are a little pricey but worth it. I can't tell you how many times I waded into the water to fish only to have a wave come up and drench me. The covers also keep out the sand and other junk from messing up the radio. No problem with hearing or speaking through the cover.
A useful gadget for the average family outing...
My husband, young daughters and I own horses, and trailride at least once a week. Santa brought us four of these lovely little two-ways this year at Christmas, and I couldn't be more pleased. We've had none of the troubles noted in the other reviews, (although we don't ride on mountaintops), and my children find the radios simple to use and easy to understand (not to mention the cool factor!).
The radios are durable; we've dropped them in snowbanks, had them grawed on by curious horses, and thumped around in saddlebags. They're certainly useful, we know if one of us gets separated from the others they'll be able to radio in and figure out where we are. And for what we use them for, they're just perfect. We looked at a bunch of GPS handhelds, and decided we didn't need anything quite that high end. For the average family who hikes or skis, trailrides or just goes to the Mall of America, these are the perfect belt accessory. Go for it!
Great little Radio
We put these little radios through several tests hiking and camping the Cascades this summer and they passed with flying colors. The range was much better than expected. The kids found them easy to use and they took a beating. Somehow the radios came out in great shape and will be used for many other activities.
