One of the best duets albums ever--a revelation
As critics frequently say, Jose Carreras was gifted with one of the most beautiful lyric tenors ever heard, but he also was born with ambition. He pushed his voice more and more, until it became coarse and genrealized. Here in this duet collection taken from 1975 to 1979, he is in best voice. One hears him doing spectacular bel canto singing in the excerpt from Rossini's queen elizabeth opera, and the realization sinks in that Carreras could have been the pre-eminent Rossini tenor of the age--not that he would have gained nearly the fame and fortune he did. <

She is in amazing voice throghout these excerpts, and even though the early verdi, Rossini, and Donizetti are more satisfying than the couple's forays into Puccini's Tosca, that's a quibble. This is world-class sisnging, and the Philips opera sets from which the excerpts were taken are mostly classics. a timing of 75 min. is generous; it's only a shame that this CD is out of rpint, but used copies are easy to find.
