Searching for new thrills in your pursuit of pure capitalist success? If you can limit at least some of your ambitions to a board game, you're in luck. Monopoly is here, and with integrated Internet connectivity, you can now challenge other Monopolists worldwide.

The classic game--updated for the PC--still gives you all the satisfaction of being the proprietor of Park Place and Boardwalk. It also lets you weasel your way out of jail with a thin excuse for a card in your (virtual) hands. Keeping to the visual appeal of its 1930s characters, the software also boasts animated versions of favorite board pieces.

While Monopoly is obviously a strong choice for a family of players, don't kid yourself that you'll beat the game every time in solo play. If you're not paying close attention, the package's superior A.I. engine is likely to see that you'll wind up broke. This is a rare success story of a classic game that makes the jump to a new medium. The creators of Monopoly deserve a firm handshake and slap on the back, and a big roll of funny paper money. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Customer Reviews of Monopoly (Jewel Case)

Wheeling and Dealing Has Never Been So Much Fun
It isn't often that Nephew Computer Game is better than its predecessor, Uncle Board Game. However, the classic game Monopoly is one such case.

Everything about this game is brought to life via the computer version. Every title deed you land on has its own little movie scene, which is a treat to watch in and of itself. Early spaces like Purple Baltic Avenue show nothing but a dump wasteland, dirty fog rising up from its mists. Later spaces like the Blue Boardwalk are so elegantantly designed you still get the feeling of being king (or queen) of the game when you are lucky enough to buy it.

And don't think that the computer players are a joke. They are smarter than you think, and those who are new to the game can easily find themselves being outsmarted by their computer opponent(s).

Other delights abound within this game. The set pieces, such as the Race Car and the Hat and the Cannon having character traits all their own. Each one is unique as it travels around the game board.

A game such as Monopoly for the computer is one of those games that has to be played to fully get the enjoyment out of it. There are many funny videos and sequences in the game, and the background music is great to listen to while playing as well. Give this game a whirl; you're not going to find many games at this cheap of a price that give you more than what you're paying for.

MONOPOLY Passes Go, but Parking Not Free Enough
This review applies to the current version of the game, which is lightyears beyond the previous Hasbro version or any other. The board moves like the DOOM world, the tokens gleam and talk.

The game IS customizable, from the renaming of properties (either one of over a half dozen real worlds or make up your own, i.e. replace Marvin Gardens with "My Sister's Stinky Feet") to controlling prices for whammy squares. It doesn't have enough options, though. You can't disengage the auctioning of properties, nor can you set the game to stop at a given time. Also, the Community Chest and Chance decks don't have extra cards like computer SORRY does, and you're limited to the standard MONOPOLY tokens -- they don't give you a cat, a phone, or a sailboat alongside the familiar shoe, hat and dog.

Lots of luck expecting those things in a new version, though -- Hasbro sold its computer games to another company, and I doubt they'll upgrade any of them.

Nevertheless, the current MONOPOLY passes go -- er, muster.

Many good features and choices
I have always loved playing Monopoly but, after an accident at 15 limited my dexterity, handling the money became a chore. Step 1 was to use calculators (one per player) and choose honest opponents. But, this computerized version is much, much better than that for me, and most people will enjoy it's many features.

The graphics are very good and some are quite comical (watch for the rabbits and the pigeons!). And, they can be limited, if you do not like them. The Chance and Community Chest cards also have give you the option of including cards available in other countries, which adds some surprises. The game can be played by up to six players, I believe. I usually play with a friend, with both of us in front of the same computer, and we add a computerized player or two to add complexity. I have not tried the over-the-Internet option, and cannot comment on how well that works. Overall, this is a fine substitute for the actual board game and, for me, has advantages over the board version. Very well-done.
