What separates anime from cartoons is the complexity of its characters--the complicated politics and alliances are worthy of a Shakespearean history play. The protagonists may be little more than teen heartthrobs with New Wave hairstyles, but the antagonists are colorful antiheroes with conflicting motivations of guilt, self-doubt and jealousy counterpointing courage and honor. The mysterious Zechs Merquise dominates this story, challenging himself to pilot the Tall Geese in an effort to resolve his relationships with his late father, king of the Peace Craft Monarchy, and Tres Kushrenada, dilettante leader of OZ, who struggles to control the psychotic Lady Une.
Exceptional animation and production values and a haunting jazz score bring to life a cosmic adventure laden with iconographic Japanese concerns for mechanization and nuclear holocaust in Cold Battlefield, the recent installment of an original anime classic that is often compared to Star Trek in Japan. Note: This uncut version contains rougher language and slightly more violence than the edited version that plays on the Cartoon Network. Ages 6 and older for the edited version, 10 and older for the uncut version. --Lloyd Chesley

Customer Reviews of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - Cold Battlefield (Vol. 3)
Great series INTRODUCTION:
Ever since the late seventies, the Gundam series has been one of the most successful and widely-loved anime series in the world. It has become a favorite of many over the years. There have been several different sub-series over the years, and one of the most popular ones of which is the Wing series, released in the mid-nineties. This is a DVD featuring episodes fromt that series. Read on for my review.
BASIC PLOT:
The Gundam Wing series follows the exploits of five young men who pilot mobile suits against the forces of an organization seeking world domination. There's Heero (the main man), Duo (the cool guy), Trowa (the quiet guy), Quatre (the peace-lover), and Wufei (the overconfident hothead.) The battle rages on for forty-nine episodes, and as the series progresses, a number of plot twists keep things interesting. This is a rare example of a series where the characters aren't paper thin - they continue to evolve as the series progresses. This is one of the best anime series out there, as one of the best mecha series.
SERIES OPINIONS:
To put it simply, this is an excellent series. Many fans of the Gundam series call this the best sub-series of all, and honestly, who can blame them? The storyline is great, the animation is great, the characters are great - everything about this series is great. It's good to see the series get a long overdue DVD release in America.
DVD:
These DVDs are good, because they contain several uncut episodes, but they're bad in that they don't contain any special features (that is, other than the very basic DVD stuff.) The series is one of the greatest anime series out there, but don't expect any bonus material.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent anime series, and I recommend it to any anime or mecha fan. If you like either one, this series will not disappoint.
Heero is Alive!
At the end of Gundam Wing Operation 2, Heero blows up his mobile suit, and we don't know if he's alive after he blows up his gundam. But he is alive, and is saved by Trowa, who takes him to the circus that Trowa hides in. We learn that a month has gone by, and OZ hasn't done anything to the colonies.
Meanwhile, Duo and Quarte discover that thier mission to destroy OZ is the same.
Wu Fei meets Sally Po in the battlefield. Wu Fei tells Sally that weak people shouldn't fight. Lost in his emotions, Wu Fei enters his gundam and helps Sally Po get rid of OZ in an area of China.
Back at the circus, Trowa tries to kill himself, but is stopped by Catherine.
Heero and Trowa meet Noin in the last espiode of the DVD. Noin tells Heero and Trowa that Zechs wishes to finish the mobile suit battle in Antarctica.
