Customer Reviews of Mississippi Burning [Region 2]
A film to savour I saw this film at a cinema in south London when it first came out. It was a hot day, the cinema had no air conditioning, and it was like the deep south. I don't know how many times I've seen the film since, but I've rented it, bought the video, bought the DVD and watched it on television - so a hell of lot. <

>Despite these repeated viewings it never loses its power and that comes from two things. Firstly its subject matter and secondly from a powerhouse performance by Gene Hackman. Willam Dafoe, Frances McDormand and the rest of the cast are uniformly excellent - Hackman is better. <

>Loosely based on a true event in the 60's, it concerns the dissappearance of two human rights activists. The opening to the film is one of the most tense and memorable scences(and Hackman isn't even in it). Dafoe and Hackman do a variation on the good cop, bad cop routine with bad cop tactics being the final strategy! <

>Its a great film, which if you haven't seen, you should do so now. <

Dark history brought to light in this powerful film
I will not spend a lot of time talking about this film, but I would say if you have not seen it that you should give it a chance. One of the greatest casts ever are assembled, and if the awful reality of what happened that night does not shake you, you are not human! Hackman is great as well as Willem Defoe, just scary and mysterious and historically appealing with a dar sense of dread because it is hard to believe things like this have happened in recent times. Mississippi Burning is a movie that will frighten you to the very core. Mississippi Burning
Though detractors claim the movie inaccurately depicts a white FBI coming in to rescue helpless blacks, I disagree: the film features some extremely courageous black characters, and at the outset, the FBI seems more muddled than heroic. Regardless of debates on historical accuracy, the movie is breathlessly exciting and extremely well-played. Though McDormand was Oscar-nominated for the small but pivotal role of Mrs. Pell, the movie is Hackman's, as he turns in his most explosive performance since "The French Connection"(and he also got an Oscar nod).
