Transforming Bullock from frumpy to stunning is a piece of cake (although she gives pageant coach Michael Caine a run for his money), so the movie's premise is trivial at best. More enjoyable is her character's uncouth disdain for pageant contestants and her mistaken perception that they're all a bunch of bimbos. The movie nicely charts Gracie's realization that her own pageant makeover provides a much-needed ego boost. In addition to Caine's effortless scene-stealing, pageant host William Shatner and organizer Candice Bergen are smart choices for comedic support (Shatner's a perfect Bert Parks wannabe), but the movie desperately needs a credible foundation for its comedy to really pay off. Bullock's bureau boss (Benjamin Bratt) is an unconvincing dimwit, and none of the plotting is as smart as say Beverly Hills Cop in combining procedure with laughs. That leaves Bullock to carry the burden of a comedy that just barely works in her favor. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of Miss Congeniality
Silly stuff but fun What this latter Sandra Bullock film proves that she can truly stand her ground and deliver an even better film than her insipid "28 Days." This comedic look at FBI agents going undercover as beauty pageant contestants is funnier than it sounds, with Michael Caine and the ever-likeable Sandra Bullock the two main standouts.
An inept FBI tomboy with an annoying snort is coerced into posing as a beauty pageant contestant in Texas by her partner (Benjamin Bratt). There, like Cinderella, is transformed into a brunette bombshell, but she undergoes serious treatment before the pageant, by depriving herself of pizza, having Caine stuff voyeur temporary breast implants in her bikini top while her fellow FBI agents look on with interest, and other comic mania.
The script is dysfunctional, yet predictable, but the movie is so funny and Bullock sparkles as the lead role, you'll forget about it and go with the flow.
Rated PG-13 for violence, sexual references, and profanity.
Light-hearted entertainment offers skin-deep laughs
MISS CONGENIALITY is Sandra Bullock's most assured work to date after a string of maudlin performance in melodrama like Hope Floats and 28 Days. Bullock's fun and comedic timing is infectious - and it's no doubt that Ms. Congeniality warms up to the screen. She portrays Gracie Hart - who ironically, not what her name suggests, is without any demeanour and grace. She is hard-biting, cynical and is sent on a mission to prevent terrorists from creating havoc in a beauty pageant. There lies the romance with Benjamin Bratt, her partner - and her friendship with the contestants, as well as a bucketload of fun and laughter with her antics.
Ms. Congeniality is saved from its lack of originality after former movies like Drop Dead Gorgeous explores the superficial and the bitching around beauty contestants by the miraculous supporting casts. Lending hand is Michael Caine, who with his dry wits, sparkles as a consultant who trains Gracie and Candice Bergen of Murphy Brown fame, lights up the screen with her poise and screen maturity. Sandra Bullock has never been this radiant before after seeing her in a chain of dour, emotionally-drenched movies and the energy brimming in her actually made her, fortunately, refreshing and hilarious.
It is light-hearted entertainment at its best with an ensemble of seasoned supporting casts and fluffy romance. Sandra Bullock has never looked this good - so just buy it and have a barrel of skin-deep pleasure if you want to steer clear of heavy movies.
Miss Congeniality
Miss Congeniality DVD ~ Sandra Bullock is not the next idea for the noble peace prize. Then why bother with to much pretense. The movie is fun, francy free and void of social commentery which is nice.
