Customer Reviews of Mirage
A few good songs don't help "Mirage" While Fleetwood Mac's 1982 album "Mirage" is not a total waste, it still could have been much better. "Gypsy" by Stevie Nicks, "Hold Me" and "Love in Store" by Christine McVie and even "Book of Love" by Lindsey Buckingham are the best tracks. Lindsey's other tracks sound too unusual. "Only Over You" is a beautiful song by Christine. Nicks's other two songs, "That's Alright" and "Straight Back" are well written but not her best works. The group was trying to follow up "Tusk" with another "Rumours" style album with this one. Even with the hit singles it didn't work as well as their first two did. If you are looking for a good follow-up to "Rumours", after "Tusk" even, got to "Tango", a fantastic album.
Return of The Mac.
Believe it or not, Fleetwood Mac's legendary 'Rumours' album kind of passed me by on it's release and it wasn't until the release of the lead single from 'Mirage', the gorgeous 'Hold On', in the summer of '82 that I started to take notice of them. Of course, I soon backtracked and bought the last few Mac albums along with Stevie Nicks' solo works.
'Mirage', doesn't have the substance of 'Rumours', obviously, but it doesn't have the excess of 'Tusk' either, where, apparently, Lindsey Buckingham thought it quite alright to stick a load of demo tracks on the follow up to the multi-platinum 'Rumours'!
Buckingham contributes 5 songs to 'Mirage', 2 more than Nicks who was riding high on the success of her 'Bella Donna' solo album at the time. Lindsey's tunes are all bright pop gems with only 'Eyes Of The World' sounding like it could have come from the 'Tusk' sessions. 'Oh Diane', so short, sweet and simple was a big hit for the band but other songs like 'Can't Go Back' and 'Book Of Love' could have charted too.
'Gypsy' is Stevie's strongest cut here though the countrish 'That's Alright' is lovely and makes a worthy companion piece to the superb 'After The Glitter Fades' from 'Bella Donna'. Her third composition, 'Straight Back' is a more typical Stevie song perhaps bearing comparison to one of the duller tracks on side 2 of 'Bella Donna'!
Christine McVie gives us 4 songs, 'Hold On' being the highlight, but 'Wish You Were Here' is wonderfully wistful and 'Love In Store', a smaller hit single, is very catchy too. Her lovely vocals and melodies were sorely missed on the new 'Say You Will' album. It would have been a far better work with her on it.
'Mirage' will always be special to me as it was my first real taste of The Mac, but I honestly believe it stands the test of time as a great pop album 21 years later. 'Tango In The Night' is perhaps a litle stronger overall, but if you're looking for lovely melodies, unusual vocals and stunning production, 'Mirage' will serve you well.
The Worst CD Sound In My Collection
The other reviews hit the nail on the head. Very good songs, not the best, but still a good album.
But why this album has not received the Remastering of the previous albums is beyond me. It is by far the worst sound of any CD I own, even worse than some bootlegs. Very soft and flat. I expect more from a perfectionist like Mr. Buckingham.
FM, if you read this, clean this great album up. It's a classic.
