Customer Reviews of Million Seller
Should have been huge I can't believe I'm the first to review this great album. If you don't know anything about this band, let me first begin with the fact that there really wasn't even a band. It was all a joke on the indie music scene. One guy wrote and produced all the songs: Steve Gregory; although, he probably had a little help from his lead singer Hue Williams. They're two guys from Swansea, Wales. The rest of the band was imaginary. The backing band and singers were hired out; the singers, I believe were from Tallulah Gosh.
Now onto the tunes. This is pure, feel-good power pop. The Pooh Sticks were not ashamed to borrow lyrics, choruses, and melodies from other pop songs and craft them into their own great music. I'm not saying they were plagiarists; on the contrary, this is great songwriting craftsmanship. There are sparkling melodies in the choruses, yes, but also great melodies in the verses. And they also had bridges, folks. This isn't verse-chorus-verse all the time. This is great Welsh pop, done very well, and slightly cheeky. You will find yourself singing or humming these songs in the shower or wherever. There are some irresistible, catchy tunes here.
Some standout tracks are: The World Is Turning On (watch them shift seemlessly from 3/4 to 4/4 time), Susan sleepwalking (not afraid to use Major 7th chords); GoodBye Don't Mean I'm Gone (6/8 to 4/4 time, again seemless); Jelly On a Plate; Rainbow Rider (listen for the whispers in the background); the title track has some nice faint astral keyboards sounds; The Girl Wants to Be Free...Heck, there all good, from start to finish.
I personally haven't gotten tired of this album. And Optimistic Fool, the last album they released, is just as good. Bottom Line: If you want great brit pop, great songwriting and chord progressions, vocal harmonies that Crosby, Stills and Nash would KILL FOR, and fun, pure rock and roll, this is the album for you. It's too bad these two guys did not make it big.
