Customer Reviews of Millennium Dance Complex Instructional Series Introduction to Hip Hop with Shane Sparks
Poppin' and Wavin' with Mr. Sparks This video is definitely a mediocre buy for those interested in learning some contemporary hip hop moves. The production value is low, reminiscent of a home video, and at one point a cameraman enters into the shoot by accident. Also, the host, Chad Celi, is unprofessional and adds nothing to Spark's explanation of what it takes to make it as a professional dancer. However, I found Sparks explaination of how to "pop" and "wave" during hip hop moves useful. I learned that you can add flavour to your moves from numerous spots in your body.
There are two lessons total; an introductory routine and an advanced floor routine. The first, a beginner/intermediate routine, is well-explained by Sparks and broken down into manageable and interesting hip hop steps. However, it is not set to music, which limits the viewer's interest in multiple reviewings/sceenings. Also, Sparks asks his dancers numerous times if they have any questions, which is unnecessary and detracts from the already short running time of the video.
The second floor routine is short, snappy and catchy, but the sound quality of the music is horrible and the entire dance is explained in a mere eight minutes.
Overall, the video isn't worth buying if you want to learn specific steps and musical hip hop routines. I would reccommend this video to a person with previous dance experience and low expectations of sound and picture quality.
