Customer Reviews of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008
Bluetooth gps issue When using this software with a bluetooth gps receiver I'm getting a screen to actual position lag time of greater than 15 seconds - which just about makes this product worthless. I've duplicated this issue on 2 different laptops. My bluetooth gps device works just fine with Delorme Street Atlas 2007 - so I have to put the fault with Streets and Trips 2008. Customer support for S&T 2008 was inane.
Streets and trips 2008
I have been using Microsoft Streets and Trips or it's predecessor for about 10 years, purchasing a new version each year. I like having a map program that does not depend on being connected to the Internet.

>I have used the GPS receiver with it and had fairly good results. The main problem has been not having a computer fast enough or having difficulty reaching enough satellites. I also had a problem with the GPS receiver not working with one of my USB ports. Support people at all involved companies could not solve it, but I finally tried another USB port and that fixed the problem.

>Two things were disappointing with the 2008 version. One is that it now requires activation for a single computer. With previous versions I was able to use the same software on my laptop and desktop. Now I would have to purchase two copies to do that. The other is that an area where my son lives has been built at least six months, but in this version, his road is missing and the area shows exactly as it did in the 2007 version. (His road isn't even shown in Microsoft on-line maps but is shown in Google Earth.) That community in Austin, Texas, is growing rapidly and a number of roads are missing in Streets and Trips 2008, including two toll roads that have been under construction at least a year and are now complete and operating. I would have expected updates that included much more. One of the toll roads (State Hwy 130) that we drove on and paid tolls in November 2007, is about 15 miles long, but there is no planned route even shown on the 2008 version.

>A few years ago, one of the versions I had purchased had roads (in Bullhead City, AZ) that were shown on the maps, yet I found they were not finished with construction still underway. Some were partly finished, and some were not drivable at all. This caused me to turn around and have to find another route. It seems inconsistent to have some roads shown that are not actually built and other areas with roads completed for many months that are not shown in the maps.

>With maps that aren't keeping up and the program having the one-computer limitation, I may quit buying yearly versions.

<
>A difficulty I have had for many versions is the printout of maps after a route plan has been run. The default printout is not the map you are looking at, but a listing of the route directions. Also it's difficult to get the map back to full page instead of leaving room for the route directions.

>All in all I have been generally pleased with the program. It does take a little getting used to as far as moving around and zooming in and out.

>One thing that I would like to see is more road coverage for other countries. Except for Canada it only shows cities, but no roads.
Useless for My Application
I used a 2002 version on my laptop coming across the US and it worked great. Recently bought 2008 to get updated maps and loaded onto my laptop. Process went ok but I have been unable to load onto my PC. My goal was to plan trips on my PC and transfer the rout to my laptop but since I have been unable to load on both the Laptop and PC this has stymied my efforts and rendered the software almost useless. I went and purchased a Garmin GPS which I highly recommend as Microsoft is NOT very customer oriented with S&T. The Garmin works perfeectly....plan trips on the PC and download to the GPS. S&T 2008 is ok but so passe.
