Bloatware Revisited
I upgraded to MS Office 2007 so that I could more easily read those files in the new .docx format. MS Office has the new "Ribbon" interface, which seems to offer few new features, but takes up much more screen space (and can not be turned off). What a waste of space. Also, the new Ribbon hides several of the well-known commands that I had always used. For example, where is the "show/hide table gridlines" command? Not even Word Help can find it. <

>I installed all the default features, but Office 2007 keeps asking me to install the same features. For example, yesterday Word wanted the thesaurus, which was already installed. Word asked for the Office 2000 (not Office 2008) installation disk. It would be nice if MS did more quality testing and usability studies before they released their bloatware on the public.

Cheaper than full version, but...
This was purchased to replace a very aging office 2000 version on my computer, and add Office to my son's computer for school work. <

>1) If you've been using office for any length of time, the menu structure is radically different in the new version. Personally, I hate it. Others might like it. <
>2) This edition allows installing on up to three computers. A very good bargain for home use... considering the "business" version of office costs about 3-5 times as much for EACH computer. <
>3) because these are home/student versions, all programs display "non-commercial use" in the top window title bar. <
>4) The native format for office files has changed. If you want to have others with an older version open your files, you need to take the extra step to save in "compatibility mode". <
>5) If you don't save in the new format, certain features will be limited. For example, if you open an excel 2000 spreadsheet that had a specific sort applied to the data using all three available criteria, only the first one will load into '07 and you'll have to add the other two back in. (However, the new version is much more flexible... in sorting, etc. more on that later.) <
>6) Once you load office 2007, be sure to go to Microsoft Update and get all the patches. Note: you'd better have a high speed Internet connection, I think it was about 630 Megs to patch. If you don't load the updates you will be stuck with various very odd bugs. (for example, excel will give an answer of 100,000 for =850*77.1 --- the actual answer is 65535). HOWEVER there are still long standing bugs that have not yet been addressed such as =MOD function blows up on =mod(402653184,3) and larger numbers - very far short of the 15 digits of precision claimed. <
>7)This version of office does NOT include outlook - so if you're used to having that you either need to switch to something else, or purchase a new version of Outlook separately. <

>I believe that Word is not really much different than it has been for the past decade (other than the new menu structure). I have not had any use for One-Note, and I have not yet used Power-Point, so can't really speak of any changes there. Excel has gotten a good dose of changes that have long been needed: <
>1) Worksheets can now be MUCH larger. Old limit was 256 (row IV) x 65536 cells. New limit is 16,384 (column XFD) x 1,485,576 cells. <
>2) You now have much greater control over conditional formatting, sorting, etc. <

>Overall, with the exception of the Excel enhancements this is pretty much the same old OFFICE you've been using for years. However, if you have much experience with prior versions of Office, I believe you will nearly pull your hair out trying to find where some stuff moved to in the new menu structure. Quick, find out what version your running... all prior versions gave this with two clicks - "HELP, ABOUT". Now you have to click the new "Office Button", then "Excel Options" then "Resources" and now FINALLY "about". While you're here, make sure you're up to at least the SP1 version to avoid some of the annoying bugs introduced in this new version.

Microsoft has done it again. Office is Office, but they moved the functions to different tabs and where you are used to finding it, has moved.You have to learn where to find what you want to do, once you've done that,it's OK. Be careful when you save, make sure you save it to the old version selection, instead of 2007's. If not, it won't open on any other version than 2007.
