The body of the island is constructed of rubber wood, with hand-rubbed finish along the edges for elegance. The carts ample surface features beautiful and practical hard rock maple construction, ideal for mincing garlic or assembling a club sandwich. Finished with a food-safe oil to maintain the woods luster, the 1-1/4-inch top expands a full 10 inches by lifting the drop-leaf overhanging. The cart also contains two storage drawers with antique knobs to provide space for zesters, hand-mixers, spatulas, and corkscrews.
Below the drawers, two doors open to a sizeable cabinet for miscellaneous kitchen appliances, cookbooks or even a wine rack. The island includes an adjustable shelf for cabinet organization. The island stands on four "bun" feet for stationary use. For a mobile island, these feet unscrew easily for installation of four included heavy-duty casters. Two of the casters lock for a stable island during hardy chopping. The cart island requires simple assembly that takes under half an hour. The full island measures 42 by 36 inches with a 21-1/4-inch depth when the drop leaf is down. The cart has a 31-1/2-inch depth with the drop leaf up. The two drawers each measure 14-1/2 by 12-1/2 by 2-2/3 inches internally, and the cabinet offers 35 by 21-1/2 by 14 inches of storage. The full unit weighs 142 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Customer Reviews of Michael Scott Avalon Kitchen Cart Island with Maple Drop-Leaf Top, Antique Cream
Foreign made! Cheap labor and Cheap wood Seems, I would feel better if the price on this thing was $300. After assembling it, I found the unit to be sturdy but defective. Not perfectly square! The wood finish was supposed to be hand distressed bit it looks more like some guy went nuts with a drill on it. I am not very impressed with the units price to quality ratio. <

>It does have some good to it, as it seems solid and the shelving allows it to hold the appliances I have been looking at on the counter for months. The draws are also a big plus for me as I was short storage space for silverware. As the other reviewer said the draws are not very smooth when opened or closed. <

>I am being generations by giving this item 3 stars the quality and the price do not match. It is made in some foreign country with the lowest price supplies and labor. The least they can do is pass the savings along. Stick with Sauder for an island, this brand is over priced and I see why others were disappointed. <

Glad I bought it!
the Michael Scott Avalon kitch cart island arrived yesterday and is assembled and in use in my kitchen. It is exactly what I wanted! I had priced it at other websites and Amazon's price was about $300 lower - not to mention the $9.99 shipping fee. I almost didn't purchase it because of the two customer reviews that are available. The back panel is finished and looks great. It all went together without a problem. I would have liked to have better drawer glides but a little soap rubbed on them did the trick.
Not An Island - Cheap Back
We were attracted to the appearance, size, use of hardwood and shape of this piece and expected high quality from Michael Scott.

<
>From three sides, it is a very attractive piece. However, the back side is a cheap piece of plywood that is stained in a different color from the rest and has no grain or antique finish to match the rest of the piece. Because it is supposed to be a kitchen island, this cheap side is always visible.

>In our case, the back side plywood did not fill the space leaving an opening. A replacement is being shipped to us. Also the overall fit of the entire unit was not quite square so it does have some minor flaws with fit.

>We are very disappointed because it had such great potential to meet our needs.
