Touching, Poignant....In a word - Brilliant.
Message In A Bottle is simply a magnificently written novel - one that will pull you into its embrace within the first few pages, and hold you close until you tearfully turn the final page. Mr. Sparks shows, once again, that he is a master at penning the peaks and depths of human emotion. Eloquent to the end, I heartily recommend it for anyone and everyone that has a heart, or wants to remember that they have one. After closing the book, you find yourself with a strong desire to put pen to paper and compose something heartfelt, something tragically beautiful, roll it tightly, and stuff it into a bottle, to be tossed into the depths of the nearest body of water. The tragic turn in the midst of the story is indeed very sorrowful, but equally potent is the love shared between the two main characters. My autographed copy of Message In A Bottle is one of my most treasured possessions. Buy it, borrow it, beg it - but whatever you do....read it.

Timeless love story or predictable tale?
The obvious reason that anyone would read this book is that they are one of those souls that love the idea of love! They believe that love is the destiny of two individuals that meet when they least expect it. Well, if you are one of those people, this book is definitly for you.
However, on the other end of the spectrum, you have those who cannot stand to know whats about to happen on the next page of a novel. If you are one of THOSE people, this book is definitly not for you.
It is quite the sweet love story, but where is the reality in all this? Has anyone actually heard of such a thing happening? Meeting in high school, or by a friend is the norm for all "first meetings" for a couple. But by a message sent in a bottle by a lonely, distraught widower? I don't think so.
The story itself, however is quite nice, if you have a good imagination. It is deep and binding, and creates a great lesson for the soul. The story of love and loss. So it makes you wonder, is it really better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?

Typical cheesy romance novel you'd see in markets
After finishing Message in A Bottle, I thought I must have a heart of stone. I did not cry once. The story itself was unrealistic, the dialogue was stupid and cliched. It's disappointing really because I felt absolutely no connection between the two main characters, Theresa and Garret, other than lust and desperation to have a real relationship after being alone for such a long time. They are not cute as Sparks intended during moments of flirting (she slyly did this, she coyly smiled, etc)...it's not cute, disgusting to read, really.

The only redeeming quality about this novel is Catherine. I could actually feel this longing and true love between Catherine and Garret. They truly loved each other and their love was real, which is probably why it was so hard for me to accept Theresa and Garret's love...yeah, I know that's exactly what the story is about, the moral - We can all move on. T & G's love showed Theresa that we can all move on. And people can, however much I don't believe in it. But Sparks just doesn't make it believable.

The whole time I was semi-disgusted with Theresa. Why did she never tell Garret about the letters? Come on, now really...even if I were so bold as to do what she did, I would have told him about finding the letters sooner. Disgusting. Ugh. I was rooting for Catherine the whole time. And the only parts I enjoyed in the novel were Garret's flashback of him and Catherine.

I have rambled for the most part, but this novel really didn't live up to what I expected.
