Customer Reviews of Men O' War
The Third Talkie. "Men O'War" was the third talkie from Laurel and Hardy, released in 1929. A two-reeler lasting 20 minutes, and is in my opinion, one of the best short talkies they made. Directed by Lewis Foster, and featured players include James Finlayson, Anne Cornwall and Gloria Greer.
Stan and Ollie play a couple of sailors. They are in a park, and they see a couple of girls that they start to flirt with. They buy the girls sodas, although they have only got 15 cents. Not enough for the four of them. Ollie keeps taking Stan aside, and Ollie tells him when he asks what they want to drink "You Refuse". Stan keeps on forgetting by the time they get back to ordering, and keeps asking for a soda. He finally understands, and Ollie says he can have half of his drink. Stan takes it first, but drinks it whole, because his half was at the bottom, LOL. When the get the bill, they realize its more than they thought, 30 cents! Luckily, Stan puts what money he has into a slot machine, and wins the jackpot. The four of them go on a rowboat ride, and they bump into other rowers. Other people on boats get involved, and it ends in a big fight.
This is great for only a third look at the Laurel and Hardy talkies, and is hilarious. There are a few things though, that are odd. In some shots, you can hear a ukelele playing, then cut to next shot, it is completely gone. Early sound films are quite interesting in these ways. Probably the best of their talkies from the 1920's. Must see.
I have not viewed this particular video release, but this short can be found on DVD too on a few different releases. A recommendation for UK fans would be Universals near complete Laurel and Hardy collection, 21 discs of entertainment. UK DVDs are Region 2, so if you Americans can play them, you should check it out too. Or simply buy this video, or other US DVD releases. Either way, you need this short.
Laurel & Hardy as a couple of sailors out for a good time
Laurel & Hardy are a couple of sailors on leave who pick up a couple of girls in the park and head off for a good time even though they only have 15 cents between them. The best gag is when Hardy finds a pair of white panties and assumes that is what the young flapper, who is looking for her gloves, has lost. Poor Ollie end up in one of the funniest routines involving dialogue from an early Laurel & Hardy talkie. "Men O'War" ends with the boys taking the girls boating, at which point wackiness ensues. This 1929 two-reeler directed by Lewis Foster from a Leo McCarey story, is one of the few Laurel & Hardy comedies shot entirely on location.
Another great short from the masters!
Men O' War is a great film. There is really never a dull moment. It starts with the Boys being confused about 2 women (They lost something and the boys think that it is something else!). Of course, it leads into the great Soda Fountain Routine. A classic that will keep you laughing for a while!
