Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than a nostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose between three playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the characters are so different that this option actually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In the original Mega Man X titles, you couldn't progress until you found a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. In X5, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber and the X-Buster.
But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of game design is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge. X5 just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endless number of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is Mega Man with training wheels.
By Mega Man standards, this game is truly a disappointment. On the bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking for a simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game might be your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, X5 is way too easy! --Todd Mowatt
Pros:
- Mega Man returns to his 2-D platform roots
- This game is way too easy, with too many checkpoints and unlimited continues
- Text-driven cut scenes and massive slowdown problems bog this game down

Customer Reviews of Mega Man X5
Mega Man - the beginning of the end [I love the Mega Man series more than you'll ever know. That's why I've gotta be so hard on this game.]
After playing Mega Man X4 I was really expecting its sequel to blow me away. Instead, it just plain blows. However, it's still a decent game, and you may want to try it out. See the pros and cons below:
PROS:
-You can play as X or Zero, and switch between them between stages
-If you choose X as your dominant character, you automatically get his suit of armor from the last game (choose Zero as the dominant one and you get his arm cannon)
-X can collect pieces for two awesome suits of armor
-Each character can obtain an ultimate armor
-The Rock Monster and Wall Face are back
-New power-ups and challenges available
CONS:
-Several continue points in stages make the game too easy
-Bosses have the most stupid names of any Mega Man game (many are obviously knock-offs of names used by the members of Guns And Roses)
-Special weapons must be used with the Triangle button
-Final boss too easy
-Time limit rushes the player
-Enough plotholes to fill a warehouse
-Quick Man's instant kill force beams are back
-No anime cut scenes (instead, the game has still-graphic text sequences (a la Ninja Gaiden))
A decent game, but it isn't worthy of being a follow-up to the excellent X4. The little complexities do more to hurt the game than to help it, and X6 takes this too far (read my letter in the October 2002 issue of Nintendo Power entitled Fun Factor for more info on how complexity is ruining gaming.) Due to some ending differences, you may want to play through more than once. It's not exactly purchasing quality though, so I just suggest renting it.
X5: a good game, but why so heavily criticized?
Megaman X5 is a great game. I don't know why everyone criticizes it so much. It has the same great megaman gameplay, the same great graphics the series is known for, the same amount of action, and a very high level of challenge. I've heard a lot of complaints about the game's difficulty, and yes, although it IS insanely difficult, how can you call yourself a megaman gamer if that isn't what you're looking for in a MMX game? I've also heard some criticism on the music. Sure, it's not fitting for megaman, but it's good enough on it's own, nothing worth complaining about like everyone does. And sure, the Guns 'N' Roses theme is tacky, but does that really change how the game plays?! Guns 'N' Roses theme or not, the bosses in this game are cool! I don't know why everyone hates this game. Could it be because they tried something new and made it so that you could only use armor after collecting all the pieces? Is it the absence of anime cutscenes(which, although disappointing, does NOT change the gameplay AT ALL)? Is it cuz the game is timed and has several branching plot points that make the game more immersive into the plot than the others? What is it?! I want some answers, people, cuz this is a good game! For those of you who have taken someone else's opinion as your own, at least TRY the game so you can see for yourself that it's a great game featuring the same great MMX gameplay we've all come to know and love and the interesting plot we've come to expect from megaman x!
Best X game yet
Pros
- No mystery about the final boss as you fight Sigma in the opening level!
- Emphasis on Zero!
- Part customizing system
- More Armors (Falcon Armor, Gaea Armor, Ultimate Armor)
- Excellent plot depth
- Multiple endings
Cons
- Plot loopholes
- Inconsistent endings
- Timed gameplay
- Ranking system
Think of Mega Man X4 redone with more armors, deeper plotlines, and multiple endings, you've got X5.
Although this game is easier than most X games (more continue points, easy bosses), the armor customizing system is great. You can acquire parts for both X and Zero allowing you to enhance their abilities, such as rapid fire shots, higher jumping, shorter damage recoil and more. In addition to the Z-sabre, Zero has the Z-buster, which is barely useful though.
You start with the armor from X4 (Force Armor), thus the bosses are a little too easy with X, but still challenging with Zero as he has no armor. You later get Gaea Armor and Falcon Armor for X, and let me just say how awesome the latter is. You can also get Zero's black armor and X's ultimate armor without codes.
This game is judges your gameplay, meaning the faster you complete a stage, the less damage you take, the fewer enemies you defeat will increase your rank. In addition, the entire game is timed for 20 "hrs", wher every time you exit a stage you lose an "hour". Nevertheless, this new system is no big deal, as you will have plenty of time if you know what you're doing.
The plot sure does delve into Zero, rather than X. It hints to Dr. Wily many many many times.
If your a long time MMX fan, you'll notice allusions to previous games.
Definitely a game to play if you like side-scrollers and Mega Man X games.
