Customer Reviews of Mega Man X3
If you like Mega Man, that's good enough reason to get this I have played 10 Mega Man games total, and this one is arguably the best one played. The urgrades, armors, the bosses, basically everything is tight! You can play as Zero, but I gave this game only 4 stars because he can't finish an entire stage (with the exception of the 2nd Doppler stage). My favorite upgrade is the X-Buster, where I can cross-charge both shots, which is good. Anyways, if you want it, try and get it. I warn you though, this game is rare, so do your best to get it.
skip this one
X2 was a pretty good, but nothing spectacular follow-up to the original MMX, even with its share of problems, but the third installment comes pretty close to being nothing more than a piece of garbage.
Two great things about this game: One, you can play as Zero. He may not be very powerful (which is really odd when you think about it) and playing as him confirms that Mega Man could kick his butt any day of the week, but even then, Zero has more noticeable problems. One, Capcom made the game so you can't fight the final boss in each stage with Zero (or even the occasional halfway bosses, for that matter). If you try to go into a room where a boss is located with Zero, the game will force you to go back to controlling Mega Man. Want to fight Neon Tiger with Zero? Forget about it. Another bad thing is that once you pick Zero as your playable character in a stage you can only play as him once per level. So you can't keep switching between him and Mega Man. Once per stage, and that's it.
Zero is also pretty weak, taking a LOT more damage than Mega Man. A simple shot from some robot will drain a good deal of Zero's health. So much for thinking Zero was some kind of indestructible monster. You can't use any of Mega Man's weapons with Zero, either. Zero has a sword and a blaster (similar to Mega Man's) and that's it. And the worst part is that if you die with Zero one time in any level, you won't be able to play as him anymore in the game. This will also affect the ending of the game.
But at least you can play as him which gives the game some points.
Another good thing is that the graphics have improved considerably. Shiny and crisp graphics in this game, which is a wonderful improvement over the first two X games.
Now the bad. Everything else. The levels are a little longer than those in the first two X games, but unfortunately longer levels weren't even necessary since the levels are so empty. All the stages lack enemies, with Mega Man just dash jumping around through major empty areas, and this happens at many points in each level of the game. You can dash through these levels probably without even needing to hit the shoot button because hardly anything is there to shoot at.
The levels are also really lazy-looking, with not much variety. You have your ice level, electric level, forest level, acid level, and rock level, but unfortunately the other three levels feel pretty much the same. The first two Sigma stages are okay, though way too similar to each other.
Horrible weapons. If you thought the weapons in X2 were bad, you haven't seen anything yet. You have worthless weapons in X3 such as Acid Burst which shoots a tiny green ball of acid, you have Tornado Fang and Frost Shield which are basically the same painfully super-slow weapon with only minor differences (the Tornado Fang is like a drill, and the Frost Shield is a hunk of ice). You have Gravity Well which very slowly kills nearby enemies (I hope you are a patient person), and the Parasite Bomb is just a weak bomb that slowly shoots forward and locks onto an enemy, and kills them after a few seconds go by. Not very good because you have to wait a few seconds before the weapons even work and also the weapons are incredibly weak. Three weapons save the game (somewhat). The Ray Splasher is quite powerful the way it shoots numerous mini bullets, and the Triad Thunder is an electrical triangular delight! The Spinning Blades are pretty fun too.
Another problem is that this game doesn't feel as fast overall as the previous two X games. The pace has calmed down somewhat and that's the last thing a Mega Man game should be doing. Mega Man himself still moves just as fast, but everything else surrounding him seems to move more slowly. Bosses feel like they are moving in slow motion. X1 and X2 moved much faster. Must be the special chip in the game making things move a tad slower than the previous X games, though if that's the case then I can't explain why the pace was so fast in X2, since that game also had a special chip.
Finally we arrive to the last problem (that I can think of right now, anyway). The bosses are very boring because about half of them fight you the exact same way. You shoot them, you jump on the wall, they run at you, you jump over them, you shoot them, you jump on the wall, they run at you, you jump over them, you shoot them, etc. Bit, Byte, Toxic Seahorse, Sigma, Dr. Doppler, Blizzard Buffalo, Volt Catfish, Vile, and a few others fight you pretty much the same way. And before you say that it has always been like that in a Mega Man game keep in mind that at least before this game came out, bosses fought you in a more creative and unpredictable fashion. I fail to see any creativity here. Too many slow, lazy and predictable boss battles in X3 which in turn is just another reason the game is so incredibly easy (because you know what's gonna happen). If the bosses tried doing more interesting things to defeat you besides a simple back and forth battle than I would think more highly of the game.
And this game is, how much? WAY too much. Only buy this game if you can find it cheap, which you can't so avoid this game. Don't worry, you aren't missing much.
Good game, but not worth the price of admission
First off, I would like to say that finding a new, factory sealed Mega man X3 costs over $200 (even a used copy costs just under 130 bucks), so unless you have a lot of money to burn, or absolutely need this game, avoid it.
As far the as the game itself goes, it's not too bad. It marks the very first time you get to play as Zero, and it has more capsules to discover. With all standard Megaman fare in the game, it makes it a solid side scroller. But it also brings us back to reason why this game should be avoided: THE HUGE PRICE TAG! Being standard megaman fare, it just isn't worth the money to shoot bad guys and beat a boss. After all, it is still just a standard side scroller.
All in all, the game is good, but I just feel there should be a better reason for a game to be so expensive.
