Customer Reviews of Mega Man V
What Happened ??? I first played this game on my emulator 4 years ago. I found this game to be extremeley boring. There is nothing new with this game and its just not on the same level as the 4 before it. I recommend u to stick with the first 4 Mega Man games and avoid this one if u are new to Mega Man. I never got into any Mega Man games after 4, not even Mega Man X series. Maybe its cause I am older now but I seriously think if this was a good game I would have liked it when I first tried it.
Where the downward spiral began
It was in 1992 that Capcom released Mega Man V, the fifth NES installment of the "classic" Mega Man series. This would be the second to last game in the series released on the now-extinct system. Was Capcom able to make improvements on the past games, or is this just a subpar entry in the series? Read on for my review.
PROS:
-THIS GAME INTRODUCES BEAT AND THE MODERNIZED MEGA BUSTER. Beat is an often overlooked character in the Mega Man universe, but his presence here can really help you out - and having to search for the parts that are used to create him adds to the challenge level of the game. Also, this was the first game in the series to have the modernized Mega Buster that fans of the series know and love.
-THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING ENTRIES IN THE SERIES. If you liked Mega Man IV because of its aspect of challenge, you're going to love this game - it offers more of the same.
-THE GAME FEATURES A SPECIAL ITEM FOUND ONLY IN THIS GAME - THE SUPER ARROW. The Super Arrow is an interesting item that is hard to describe in words - try it for yourself to see what I mean.
CONS:
-FOR SOME REASON, CAPCOM CHANGED THE SOUND EFFECT THAT IS MADE WHEN YOU DESTROY ENEMIES! This isn't that big of a deal, but still, it can be annoying at times. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-THE RUSH COIL HAS BEEN RUINED. Now instead of springing off of Rush, Rush springs off of the ground, and you must jump off of him at the peak of his jump! I'm glad they ditched this after this game!
-IF YOU GET HIT WHILE CHARGING YOUR MEGA BUSTER, YOU LOSE YOUR CHARGE. This is extremely annoying, as you'll often see in the heat of battle.
-PASSWORDS DON'T SAVE EVERYTHING. The passwords will only take you to the first station of the fortress, and they won't save your energy tanks. Of course, a gamer seeking a challenge could see this as a good thing.
-THE STORYLINE, WHILE INTRIGUING, CONFUSED MANY FANS. I'm sure that this plotline (along with the Mega Man cartoon) convinced many fans that Proto Man is evil.
-THE RUSH JET HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. In Mega Man III, you had precision control of the Rush Jet. But in Mega Man IV they ruined it, making it so it was always in motion until Rush flew into an object. This is SO annoying. Why didn't they fix it?
-THE SUPER ARROW ISN'T EXECUTED VERY WELL. Although this is an interesting item, I don't think that Capcom did a very good job with it.
-THIS IS A SUBPAR ENTRY IN THE SERIES. Just about every other Mega Man game on the NES beats this one out in terms of quality.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a good game, but it falls flat when you compare it to the other NES Mega Man titles. Still, the weaker Mega Man games are better than the strong titles in most other series of games. IF you're a fan of the series, it's worth checking out.
The fifth installment
Not many game series live to see four games on a single console, but Mega Man got SIX GAMES on the NES alone! In 1992, the fifth installment in the now-classic series was released! Read on for my review of Mega Man 5.
Graphics: EXACTLY THE SAME as the previous games. But as any long-time die-hard fan on the Mega Man series knows, that's a very GOOD thing. 4/5
Play Control: Once again, exactly the same. They powered up the Mega Buster, but starting with this game if you're charging it up and get hit, you have to start over. THAT IS A HUGE PAIN. 3.5/5
Challenge: This is one the toughest entires in the series on the NES. The stages are trecharous and unforgiving, passwords don't save you energy tanks, and getting all of the Beat parts is anything but easy. And if you don't take some energy tanks into the final duel with Wily, prepare to lose. 4.5/5
Theme/Fun: This is a fun game with plenty of innovations, but they could've done things a lot better too. Still, I'm not complaining. 3.75/5
Sound/Music: The sound is almost exactly the same as other games, but they changed the "kill an enemy" sound for some reason. The old sound for this was much better. Likewise, the music is good, but don't expect a musical revolution. 3.75/5
Storyline: Proto Man has turned evil, attacked the world, and captured Dr. Light! A good story, but it kind of repeats what happened in the last game. Likewise, it convinced everyone that Proto Man really IS evil, especially the writers of the Mega Man cartoon series. 3.5/5
Originality: Beat and the "modernized" Mega Buster are the only real innovations this game brought. And I HATE what they did to the Rush Coil! 3/5
Replay Value: If you're a Mega Man die-hard who likes a good challenge (which earlier games in the series certainly DIDN'T provide), welcome to Paradise! 4/5
OVERALL SCORE: 4.25/5
Sure, this isn't the finest entry in the series, but it's still an excellent game. If you're a gamer with an NES who likes old-school platform action, this one is for you.
