Customer Reviews of Mega Man IV
The final "great" Mega Man game on the NES By the time 1991 rolled around, one thing was for sure - Capcom was getting REALLY good at creating Mega Man games. Each entry in the series to the time had kept the same basic gameplay style of the predecessor, but threw in just enough new stuff to keep the game play fresh. It was in 1991 that the fourth entry in the series, Mega Man IV, was released. Read on for my review.
PROS:
-THE GAME IS MORE CHALLENGING THAN THE LAST TWO WERE. If you're a Mega Man fan, and you didn't like the last two games because they "weren't hard enough", you're going to love this game. It recaptures the challenge of the original game (okay, it's not quite THAT hard, but it's a good challenge nonetheless.)
-THE MEGA BUSTER MADE ITS GRAND DEBUT HERE, AS DID EDDY/FLIP-TOP. Being able to charge your cannon up and fire larger shots has become a legendary feature in the series, and this was where that feature was born. It was still a bit rough around the edges, but for the most part, was there in its execution. Eddy doesn't add much to the game, but he's a good addition nonetheless.
-FINALLY, A MEGA MAN GAME WITH A NEW VILLAIN! Dr. Wily's presence in past games was obviously becoming stale, so Dr. Cossack is the new bad guy... or so it seems.
CONS:
-THE PASSWORDS ONLY TAKE YOU TO THE FIRST STAGE OF THE FIRST FORTRESS, AND THEY DON'T SAVE YOUR ENERGY TANKS. LIKEWISE, THERE AREN'T ENOUGH CONTINUE POINTS IN THE FORTRESSES. These things can hurt the replay value of the game, but the gamer seeking a challenge may actually welcome these features.
-PROTO MAN ONLY APPEARS ONCE. Fortunately, the appearance of him here helps to spread the word that he's a good guy and not a bad guy. But still, his presence is lacking in this game, and I think more of it could have helped the game.
-THE MEGA BUSTER NEEDS WORK. The fully-charged shots don't even look right, and the medium-level shots do no more damage than regular shots!
OVERALL:
Overall this is a great game, and it stands as the last truly great Mega Man game to appear on the NES. If you've got an NES and you like Mega Man, and you're looking for a good challenge, you've come to the right place.
The last great Mega Man game...
In Mega Man IV, Mega Man fights a new adversary named Dr. Cossack and finds out that Wily is pulling the strings. This game is hit hard by a lot of Mega Man fans, but they are the ones that are close-minded. This game, people, is the last great Mega Man game. Read on to see why, even if you're a little bullheaded not too realize it:
THE GOOD
Mega Man's back with Rush and you fight eight new robotmasters and is equipped with a new "megabuster." This has been changed later on, but this is one of the games where it functioned the best. The storyline is a refreshing change from the previous games, even if it's been ripped off later on. You also get two items in addition to your other inventory, the Balloon Adaptor and the Wire Adaptor (why was this ignored in later games?!). The music is great and it connects well with the other games (except 3, but oh well).
THE BAD
Umm... hmmm... bad? Let's see... Proto Man appears once. That's the only bad. Don't agree? Bite me.
OVERALL
CLASSIC, CLASSIC, CLASSIC! A great NES game with great amount of fun involved. This is the last truly great Mega Man game, as the next batch of games would go a little downhill. This is another Mega Man game I grew up with and it's still one of my favorites, if not my all-time favorite (see my Mega Man III review). Any true NES fan SHOULD NOT ignore this masterpiece.
No more easy games.
Mega Man 2 and 3 were excellent games, but they were very simplistic. Would this game be another easy game, or a tough one at long last? Let's see.
Graphics: 4/5
The graphics are very simple, smooth, and to the point. Capcom's NES games were renowned for their high resolution, and here it shows. There is virtually no slow-down whatsoever.
Play Control: 4.5/5
VERY simple and to the point, just like the graphics. Shoot, walk, jump, and slide. This game added the feature of charging your standard cannon, something very common in the series now.
Challenge: 4.25/5
This game is a challenge. Not one stage of this game is easy. Even most of the Robot Masters and fortress bosses put up a pretty strong fight. Don't expect a free ride.
Theme/fun: 3.75/5
I give, this isn't quite Mega Man 3, but it's still a worthwhile adventure. Unfortunately, the Rush Jet was RUINED for this game. You no longer have the precision control you had in 3, and it just goes forward endlessly. You only control the vertical position. However, the Balloon Adaptor makes up for this. While the game is undeniably difficult, it's fun.
Storyline: 4/5
After the past game, Dr. Wily was (supposedly) killed in the destruction of the peace robot. Now, a new eviler scientist, Dr. Cossack, has created eight robots of strengths even greater than those of Wily! This is an excellent new story, but a plot twist kind of derails it.
Music/Sound: 3.5/5
No songs really stand out in this game, but none of them are below average, either.
Overall: 4/5
This game isn't better than 3, but it's a worthwhile game nonetheless. NES owners should play it - enough said.
