The fork prongs contain sensory tips that monitor temperatures when inserted in meat. The fork electronically sends this information to the easy-to-read LCD display located on the side of the forks body. Icons for four different categories of meat light up as heats reach the safe temperature point for fish, red meat, white meat, and poultry. The screen also monitors four divisions of wellness: rare, medium rare, medium, and well done. With these two wellness scales, users can ensure their health while suiting their taste preferences. Additional features include an overdone indicator, low battery notification, and automatic shutdown. A replaceable 1.5-volt AA battery powers the fork for up to two years and comes installed. The fork should not be immersed in water or placed in a dishwasher. For the best care, wipe with a wet cloth and dry immediately. Maverick offers a limited 90-day warranty. Works well, but... We bought this thermo-fork mainly for barbequing. Who wants to cut into their meat a few times to see if it's done? Well, this fork makes it easy to tell graphically if your meat, fish, pork, or fowl are rare, medium rare, medium, medium-well, or well-done, plus the actual temperature is given. We've had pretty good results with chicken, but hamburgers tend to fall apart when pronged on the grill. Two gripes, though. First, the display is awkward to read (upside-down) when you're pushing the fork into the meat. Second, the handle is not at all water tight. So, when you wash the fork and splash water on the handle (inevitable...) water seeps in and gets the display wet and fogged. Moreover, water can remain trapped between the display and the "conductive sponge strip" that connects the display to the circuit board. Result: display fades or disappears. Not too bad to fix (open it up and dry off all contacts carefully,) but not robust. If I had to buy another, I'd consider the straight thermometers without the fork part.
