Customer Reviews of Mastering Chess Vol.6: Rapid and Complete Opening Repertoire for Black
inexpensive expedient way to obtain GM instruction just like going to college for chess...and you can repeat a few times...then take a couple of midterms by playing in some minor tournaments...and the final at a major event...or use the budget way by playing against crafty the computer 2600 GM that comes with the dvd... <
>for the lazy player who wants quick boot camp style instruction...just the essentials...who can remember the numerous sub-sub-sub-variations in dense books...excellent review just before a tournament... <
>see heard and learn in 2 hours...and soon you think and talk chess expertly with a russian accent
Dzindzi recommending the Pirc??
I don't have this DVD, but I do have "Roman's Encyclopedia of 40 Essential Chess Openings", a serie of 4 DVD's (let's call it "RECO"). That's why I was more than just a little surprised when I read "Alexander"'s review:
<
>
<
>'Against 1. e4 he suggests 1. ... d6 intending 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5.'
<

<
>This looks like a transposition to the Pirc Defence (I might be wrong, since I don't know if Black fianchetto's his f-Bishop to g6 after 3.Nc3 e5). 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 defines the Pirc though, and on DVD 4 of "RECO" Dzindzichashvili rejects this defence against 1.e4 for Black (he only shows how to refute 1.e4 d6 2.Nf6 d4 - the Pirc - if you play White...).

>If I'm correct about this supposed inconsistency then people thinking of buying this DVD be aware... However, if this DVD suggests a system for Black against 1.e4 other than the Pirc, I would like to change the two stars into atleast 4, because watching a GM talking (sense) about chess for over two hours is always a cool experience.
Basically, it does what you'd expect it to.
On this DVD Grandmaster Roman Dzindzichashvili spends just over two hours presenting an easy to learn openings repertoire for black. Against 1. e4 he suggests 1. ... d6 intending 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 e5. Against 1. d4 he suggests the Nimzo and Bogo Indians. Against 1. c4 he suggests a reversed Sicilian with 3. ... Bb4. This is a very sensible selection of systems which are not only easy to learn but will also expose players to a variety of different kinds of positions and will therefore be good for their chess. Furthermore, against unprepared opponents they can be very dangerous, particularly because many of the resulting positions are easier to play as black than white.

>The production quality is adequate but there are moments when Roman gets a little confused and leaves pieces on the wrong squares which is slighly irritating if you spot it and confusing if you don't! Also, he talks in a very measured way, which I find a bit too slow, but playing the DVD at 1.5x normal speed solves this problem. Basically, it's good enough.

>So, what you get for your money is two hours of coaching (which you can experience over and over again!) giving you a sensible set of openings for black. Obviously, in two hours he can't cover every possible variation, and he can't teach you everything there is to know about the openings he's recommending, but then again, the sort of person who would buy this DVD is the sort of person who only wants to learn the essentials, and that's exactly what Roman offers; the minimum amount of knowledge necessary to make it through the opening safely. That's really what you'd expect from this product, isn't it? And you can't really ask for much more than that, can you?
