Customer Reviews of Master of Puppets (Jpn Lp Sleeve)
Third time is always a charm Master Of Puppets (1986.) Metallica's third album, and the last to feature Cliff Burton on bass.
After the success of Ride the Lightning, Metallica decided it would be good to make their follow-up album something similar, but different enough to still sell records. What they came up with was the Master Of Puppets album. And in 1986, they unveiled this new record to the public. Many fans of heavy metal call this one of the greatest albums of the genre. Are they right? Read on for my review of Master Of Puppets.
Battery, the opening song, kicks off with a spanish-sounding acoustic guitar solo, and fast becomes raw thrash metal. Of the rawer thrash-based Metallica songs ever released, this is probably number one. The title track is a masterpiece that really needs no introduction or comments from me - the results of it speak for themselves. The Thing That Should Not Be, track three, is a slower, more gothic song than what the band normally does. I guess you could call it their equivalent to Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name. Welcome Home (Sanitaruim), the next track, is another more gothic tune, but halfway through the band changes its style to a more interesting one. An awesome progression for the band. Disposable Heroes is an awesome epic dealing with the band's hatred for war, and the lives it costs. Awesome lyrics, verses, chorus, and instruments. Leper Messiah: Interesting track, but not up to the rest of the album. That's not to say it's bad though - it rocks. Orion is the best Metallica instrumental of all. It kicks off with a furious assault of metal, and then goes into a melodic session, before fading back to more metal! You can't pass this one by. The closer, Damage Inc., is a generic thrasher, but it's still a good song overall.
This was the final Metallica album to feature the bass mastery of Clifford Lee Burton, who would lose his life in a bus accident half a year after the release of this album. It's a shame, because without him the band wasn't able to hold together for very long. Well, the quality of their music anyway. If you're a fan of heavy metal, this is a must buy.
