Customer Reviews of Mass
"eRa" Continues with the Same Formula The third CD from eRa provides no drastic changes than previous offering. Their first album was a major hit as one of their songs was featured in the 1998 WorldCup Soccer for MasterCard. The ad and the music it featured was so big, it made people think who was responsible behind the music showcased.
Their second CD was not that great. Something that sounded as going the same path where Enigma headed after the success of their first couple of CDs. i was surprised that eRa released their third album. That could only have meant one thing. People out there were still interested and still buying their work. This album, though very similar to the first two is also a bit different. More vocals are featured here, and I have to admit these vocals work in that sense. In Enigma, the vocals were either of a nymphomaniac or a guy screaming his head off because of something or the other.
The best example of this alluring voice is heard in "Don't U Forget About Me". A poignant story about childhood friendship and how the times can change people. Most of the other work in the album is then remixed versions of old material, something that Enigma used to do with success, up to a point that is. Carl Orff's O Fortuna here is another clear cut Enigma move. Though the people of eRa decided to make a video out of it.
If there ever will be a fourth eRa CD, I think that the composer of these songs, think twice before adding new versions of old songs. People would like to hear Ameno, but just not in every album by the same artist. The good thing about this CD is that it's not too long. Though it's an import, the price can tend to be a bit steep (I bought this here in the UAE, so it's not technically an import for us).
If you have the time, listen to this CD, but don't steal from your grandma's welfare check to buy it though. It's not worth the killing and the guilt.
Good, but not stellar
I fell in love with Era after hearing a just a few little pieces off their second album, Era 2. That album is pure joy, and besides listening to it a lot myself, I've also given it as a gift.
Therefore, after such a long time, I was thrilled that Era just came out with another album. It wasn't a question of if I was going to buy it, but rather when.
This album is good, but it seems to lack the magic of their previous albums (especially their second). Some of the music seems almost recycled, and, in contrast to Era 2, there is a lot more solo singing in English. This in itself isn't bad, but it seems to draw the focus away from the chants and lush orchestrations. On listening to this album a couple times now, I almost get the feeling that a lot of the orchestral pieces on this album could be movie background music, which isn't bad, but I did expect something more inspiring and alive from Era.
Era - The Mass, A Continuation of Success
The third Volume of Era is again, a beautiful piece of crafted sound art. Eric Levi has not lost what made Era 1 and Era 2 successes, a blend of wondrous vocalists mixed with glorious beats. The Mass, Avemano Orchestral, Enae Volare and Vonifera are the picks of the CD.
Yes, it is a short escape from reality but it is well worth it. I cannot wait to hear the next Era. Eagerly waiting! Let's just hope that it will not be too long a wait.
