Customer Reviews of Marimba Fantasy - The Art of Keiko Abe
Authentic Style -- A Must Have Abe music is now recorded by many artists, but in many cases, it lacks the style the music requires. Abe's music has solid foundation of Japanese traditional music, which requires profound "Rubato". This Rubato is not free to take but requires authentic Japanese style. For most Japanese, this is a very natural thing but others must learn. For this purpose, this album is invaluable. Besides, just as a listner, it is superbly played. Then, why not have one? It is a must have.
Must have...
I have enjoyed many artist's recordings of Abe's works, but none as much as this compilation of her performances of her own music. To hear her own interpretation of the cadenzas and ad lib sections of the music adds a whole new insight to her intentions for the peices as well as showcases her talents as a performer and composer. Even though solo marimba is often considered an acquired taste, the variety of emotion and style presented in these peices is easy to enjoy even if you have never seen a marimba. For percussion enthusiasts, this album is a must have. Enjoy.
Marvelously Melodic Marimba
If you thought that the marimba's only function was to add color to Latin American music, this CD should cure you of that misconception. The compositions and performances recorded here by Keiko Abe are wonderfully done. While solo marimba might be somewhat of an acquired taste, it shouldn't be too difficult to enjoy and appreciate the very interesting moods created by Abe's writing and playing.
