Customer Reviews of Mannequin (1987)
It's a spectacular romance! :) 80's romantic comedy movies have never gotten a great rap, but this movie displays many of the reasons why we love these guilty pleasures. Yes, the guy is meek... and yes, the girl is a mannequin, but since when have great romantic movies ever been about what's "realistic". An ignorant, near-sighted, movie-goer who can't possibly read between the lines of a quirky plot to see what the real message of the story is will never appreciate a classic like Mannequin. But for those of us who know how to see beyond the basic setting of the movie to the undeniable chemistry that is going on, we can't help but love it!. When it comes right down to it, it's a story of two people looking for a place to belong, one needs someone to believe in him and inspire him, the other is a girl who's looking for someone to accept her just the way she is, charisma and all. The world will always try to come between two people who are striving to make a "complicated" relationship work, but ultimately love really does triumph over all. The chemistry between Andrew McCarthy and Kim Catrall made this quirky romatic comedy really come together, and to this day Mannequin has warmed the hearts of all the "hopefull-romantics" who see it. All-in-all, Love makes you do things you never thought you'd do... and THAT's reality! ;)
A Sexual Vanilla Sky for the Thinking Man
"You are one...sick...puppy!" indeed.

>A taut psychological thriller, "Mannequin" is a whirlwhind decent of one man further into his mind and into madness. Obsessed with Egyptian motifs, the man finds sexual release only in dry humping the piece of wood in his store only to spite James Spader. Brilliant. His conflicted sexuality manifests not only in the hallucinations of the alive mannequin, but also in his eccentric homosexual "friend," Hollywood. It is this "Designing Women" star that really "brought the movie to life," so to speak; the thoroughness of the main character's fake persona's coming to life couldn't be made more convincing. And the ironic denounment is filled with carefully planted clues by director Michael Gottlieb all to be answered in his "Mannequin 2."

>Though I do agree with one view who said, "This movie would be gooder with Michael J. Fox," there isn't much any human being could create to thrilling climax on the mannequin-destroying-machine. I recommend this product with a proud five stars, even though I am personally holding off the for 20th anniversay DVD edition, if only so the director's commentary can finally answer the unanswered questions. I'm hoping that Andrew McCarthy discusses how to make such magic with a mannequin and how to keep things cool with a hot dame like Kim "I Had Sex With the Whole City" Cattrall as well. We too would never interrupt him when he's "getting a piece of wood," as the irrepressible Hollywood put it.

>Perhaps Sight and Sound shall lift its moratorium against "Mannequin" or "Mannequin 2" in next decade's top ten list.
DID YOU KNOW....
It's hard to believe little "Emmy" from this movie grew up to be "Samantha" on Sex & the City. Brat packer Andrew McCarthy ...whatever happened to him? A little bit of trivia for ya---NO SOUNDTRACK was ever released because the movie big shots didn't think the movie would do all that well at the box office. STARSHIP'S song NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW was released as a single on 45 because it was so popular. Sadly, the other songs in the movie, BELINDA CARLISE'S IN MY WILDEST DREAMS was never released & ALISHA'S DO YOU DREAM ABOUT ME was only available on her 1987 solo album which is now out of print. In 2007 will be its 20th anniversary since the movie was released. You'd think they'd rerelease it on DVD or put out a soundtrack.
