An illegal alien from the Dominican Republic dreams he can make it on the Great White Way, but instead he finds a job cleaning toilets, all the while dodging the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Does that keep him from dancing? Or romancing the owner of the dance studio that employs him? Of course not! This cornball cheapie is surprisingly stylish and provocative, with a fresh look delivered by director Joseph B. Vasquez (Hangin' with the Homeboys). If he could do so much with just wit and attitude, imagine what he could accomplish with a budget. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews of Manhattan Merengue
Why Can't We Have a Real Latin Dance Film? For anyone who really knows what merengue is, don't let the title fool you. Seems everytime there is a movie with a latin dance theme it is either a ballroom dance movie or a jazz dance movie (this movie is of the latter category). Rarely do we see the real thing (latin street or club dancing). If a movie with a dance theme fails in plot, we can forgive it if the plot serves as nothing more than an exuse to showcase some great dance numbers. Unfortunately this movie has neither great dancing nor a great plot. There is nothing fresh or interesting about the dancing and the plot is so unrealistic its just plain silly. Why would I want this on DVD when a cheap video will do? A great idea but ultimately a boring disappointment and insult to my intelligence. It was good for some laughs I suppose. Hard to believe the cast of "Like Water For Chocolate" landed in this mess.
