Poor Godai! When he's not making a fool of himself, his friends step in and do it for him. Having discovered Kyoko is a widow, he drives himself crazy wondering what her late husband was like--worries his neighbor Yotsuya is happy to exploit. He gets so wrapped up in romantic fantasies that he walks into a telephone pole. While he's still nursing the headache from that encounter, Kyoko's 12-year-old niece insists that Godai become her tutor. She quickly learns how to embarrass him with questions about his feelings for her aunt. Things go from bad to worse in "Godai's Unspeakable Declaration!" At a bar near their school, Sakomoto gets Godai so drunk that he bellows his love for Kyoko. The whole neighborhood hears--thoroughly humiliating the object of his affection. When he wakes up the next morning, he can't remember anything he said or did, and decides he must have performed a striptease for Kyoko's benefit. When he tries to laugh off this imaginary misdeed, he makes his declaration of affection sound insincere, which infuriates her. The course of true love seldom runs smooth--and never does in Maison Ikkoku. Not rated: suitable for ages 13 and up for sexual humor, alcohol use, smoking, and slapstick violence. --Charles Solomon
